DOCX to Text Converter
Extract plain text from a .docx Word document in your browser with Mammoth.js. Formatting, images and list numbers are removed, while paragraphs and table text are kept on separate lines. Copy the text, download it as a .txt file named after your document, and check word and character counts. A simple PDF copy is built on request.

Get the Words Out of a Word File
Word documents carry far more than words: styles, fonts, tracked changes, comments, embedded images and a lot of invisible XML. When you paste from Word into a website editor, a spreadsheet, a translation tool or a chat with an AI assistant, that hidden baggage often comes along and breaks things. The DOCX to Text Converter strips a .docx file down to its plain text so you can use the words anywhere, and shows you how many words and characters there are while it is at it.
Common reasons to use it:
- Pasting an article into a CMS or newsletter builder without inheriting Word's fonts and spacing.
- Checking a manuscript or assignment against a word limit.
- Feeding clean text into translation, proofreading or text analysis tools.
- Saving a lightweight .txt copy of a long document for search or archiving.
- Reading a Word attachment on a device that has no office software.
What You Get, and What Is Left Behind
Text extraction is done with Mammoth.js (version 1.7.2) and its raw text mode. That mode walks through the document body and returns the text of each paragraph, separated by line breaks.
| Part of the Word document | In the plain text output? |
|---|---|
| Paragraph and heading text | Yes, each on its own line |
| Text inside tables | Yes, cell by cell on separate lines, without the grid |
| Bold, italics, underline, colours, fonts, sizes | No; formatting is removed |
| Images, charts, shapes | No |
| Automatic list numbers and bullets | No; the item text remains |
| Hyperlinks | The visible link text only |
The result is ordinary text with no markup at all, which is exactly what most destinations want.
Where the Processing Happens
Reading the .docx and extracting its text happens in your browser. Your Word file is not uploaded, and extracting text sends nothing to the server. The Download PDF button becomes active after a successful conversion, but the PDF is only made when you press it: the page then sends the extracted text, not the file, to the site's PDF endpoint. The server lays the text out on A4 pages in 11-point Helvetica with the tc-lib-pdf library and returns the PDF directly; the code does not store it.
If your document's text must not leave your device at all, simply do not press Download PDF. Copy Text and Download Text work entirely in the browser.
How to Extract Text From a DOCX
- The settings panel reads "Running in DOCX to Text mode." You do not need to choose anything else.
- Drop the Word file on Drop a DOCX file here, or press Select File to browse a document from your device. Only .docx files are offered by the picker.
- Confirm the file line shows the right name and its size in KB.
- Press Convert Now.
- When Status shows Completed with "DOCX text has been extracted successfully.", the text is in Output, and the Words and Characters tiles show the counts.
- Press Copy Text to copy everything to your clipboard, or Download Text to save a .txt file named after your document (
chapter-1.docxbecomeschapter-1.txt). - If you want a simple PDF of the same text, press Download PDF. The text is sent to the server to build it, and the file is saved as
chapter-1.pdf. - Press Clear to start over with another document.
Reading the Word and Character Counts
The Words tile counts groups of characters separated by spaces or line breaks in the extracted text. The Characters tile counts every character, including spaces and line breaks. Because tables, headers and footers are handled differently from Word, and Word may count hyphenated words or footnotes in its own way, expect the figures to differ slightly from Word's word count. For a hard submission limit, treat this as a close estimate and confirm in the program the limit is checked with.
A Short Example
Imagine a one-page Word memo with a bold title, a two-column table of dates and tasks, a company logo in the header and a bulleted list of action points. After conversion, the Output box holds the title as a plain first line, then each table cell on its own line in reading order (date, task, date, task), then the action points as separate lines without bullet symbols. The logo and header are gone. Pasted into an email or a ticket system, that text drops in cleanly with no stray fonts or invisible table borders, and you can add your own bullets or line breaks where the new destination needs them.
The same memo saved as .txt with Download Text opens in any text editor on any operating system, which makes it a handy format for keeping a searchable copy of documents alongside the originals.
Practical Tips
- Save legacy .doc files as .docx first. Mammoth reads only the modern Office Open XML format.
- If you need numbered lists in the result, convert automatic numbering to typed numbers in Word before extracting.
- Accept or reject tracked changes in Word first so the text reflects the version you actually want.
- For very long documents, use Download Text rather than Copy Text; a .txt file is easier to move around than a huge clipboard entry.
- When pasting into an HTML editor, paste as plain text if the editor offers that option; it keeps your line breaks tidy.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Dropping a PDF here. This page only handles .docx and shows "Invalid file" for other types. For PDFs, use the PDF to Text converter.
- Trying password-protected Word files. Encrypted documents cannot be opened by Mammoth; remove the password first.
- Expecting formatting to survive. If you need styles or images, this is the wrong output format.
- Assuming the Text Font Size and Line Spacing boxes affect anything. In the current code they are not used for the text output or the PDF.
Limitations
One document at a time, .docx only, plain text only. Images, layout, comments and list numbering are not carried over. The optional PDF copy is a basic A4 text layout in a Latin font, so non-Latin scripts may not display in it, although they do appear correctly in the plain text output, which is produced in your browser. If building the PDF fails, the Status shows "PDF generation failed." and the extracted text stays in Output, ready to copy or download. For a styled-free PDF as the main goal, the DOCX to PDF converter page explains that output in detail.
