What the Odisha Public Service Commission is

The Odisha Public Service Commission recruits for Odisha government posts and conducts the Odisha Civil Services and the combined competitive examinations, alongside direct recruitment to administrative, police, revenue and department posts. Selection for the civil services runs through preliminary and main examinations followed by document verification.

Odisha asks for a third image alongside the photograph and signature. The record includes a left thumb impression at 3.5 by 1.5 centimetres, sharing the same frame as the signature and the same 500 KB allowance, which is an image made on paper rather than a crop of the portrait. It is validated separately from the photograph, so getting the portrait right does not offset a thumb impression that falls outside its own specification.

Start from oppsc.in for the OPSC notification. Where a third-party page lists a different size from the one in the table above, the notification wins, and a corrigendum published later can supersede both.

This page sets out the numbers OPSC actually asks for. It is not a general guide to cropping or to the tool interface, because those instructions do not change from one exam to the next and they are written up separately.

What the OPSC form asks you to upload

3 images go into this form. That is the detail most candidates miss, because the photograph and signature are the obvious ones and the remaining uploads are easy to overlook until the portal rejects the submission. They are:

  • A photograph at 3.5 x 4.5 cm, no heavier than 500 KB and no lighter than 50 KB.
  • A signature at 3.5 x 1.5 cm, no heavier than 500 KB and no lighter than 50 KB.
  • A left thumb impression at 3.5 x 1.5 cm, up to 500 KB.

The OPSC numbers, and why they matter

Notice that the OPSC figures are measurements in centimetres, not pixels. At 200 DPI a 3.5 by 4.5 centimetre frame is a specific pixel count, and the tool derives it rather than guessing. A photo that is the right number of pixels but the wrong DPI reads as the wrong size to a portal that checks both.

There are two limits to satisfy for OPSC, not one. The upper bound on the photograph is 500 KB and the lower bound is 50 KB; the signature runs 50 KB to 500 KB. Compression that overshoots is easy to fix by lowering quality again, but a file under the floor cannot be fixed by compressing further, it needs a larger source image.

There is a third upload on this form: document at 3.5 x 1.5 cm, up to 500 KB. These sit alongside the photograph and signature rather than replacing them, and each carries its own ceiling, so a file prepared for the portrait is the wrong starting point for them.

If the OPSC application refuses your file

  • When OPSC refuses a file, weight is the first thing to check, because 500 KB leaves limited room. Look at the final size on the result card. If it sits above the limit, the source was cropped too loosely: tighten the frame and compress again.
  • For the OPSC signature, keep the crop tight around the ink. The 3.5 x 1.5 cm frame is small, so every extra millimetre of empty paper is weight you do not have, and the 500 KB ceiling does not leave room for it.
  • A third attempt with the same settings will produce the same result. Read the current notification again, because the specification is corrected by corrigendum from time to time and the values in this tool follow the specification as recorded.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cropping to a face, choosing a compression level, and the reasons a correctly sized photograph still gets refused do not vary by exam, so those are covered in one place rather than repeated here. Read the complete photo and signature guide.

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न

परिणाम पर भरोसा करने से पहले उपयोगकर्ताओं द्वारा पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्नों के संक्षिप्त उत्तर।

3.5 x 4.5 cm at 200 DPI, in JPEG, with the file kept at or under 500 KB and not under 50 KB. That row in the table is the preset the tool applies when OPSC is selected.

3.5 x 1.5 cm at 200 DPI, in JPEG, capped at 500 KB with 50 KB as the floor. Crop close to the ink so the empty paper around it does not push the file past the ceiling.

The ceiling is 500 KB and the floor is 50 KB. Compression runs on export until the output fits, and the result card prints the achieved weight against the limit rather than leaving you to check it yourself.

Keep the download in JPEG. Re-encoding the file afterwards, which is what happens when it passes through a chat app or an image editor, adds bytes and can alter the stored dimensions even though the picture looks unchanged.

The stored rows are 3.5 x 4.5 cm for the photo and 3.5 x 1.5 cm for the signature, JPEG at 50-500 KB and 200 DPI.

The preset stores a 3.5 x 1.5 cm left thumb impression at 50-500 KB. Upload it only when the OPSC form asks for one.
