What the Central Reserve Police Force is
The Central Reserve Police Force traces its origin to 1939, when it was constituted as the Crown Representative's Police, and took its present name under the CRPF Act of 1949. It is an armed force of the Ministry of Home Affairs deployed in internal security duties, and it runs its own recruitment for constable, head constable and Group B technical and tradesmen posts through a dedicated recruitment portal.
The stored specification has an unusual feature worth reading carefully: the two photograph rows do not simply differ in resolution. The 96 DPI entry allows up to 500 KB, while the 200 DPI entry allows only 40 KB. That is a much tighter ceiling than the lower-resolution version, so the higher-resolution option is the harder one to satisfy, not the easier one. There is also a third upload beyond the portrait and signature: the supporting certificate documents are scanned at 8.5 by 11 inches, which is full page rather than a crop.
Start from crpf.gov.in for the CRPF notice. Where a third-party page lists a different size from the one in the table above, the notice wins, and a correction published later can supersede both.
This page sets out the numbers CRPF actually asks for. It is not a general guide to cropping or to the tool interface, because those instructions do not change from one exam to the next and they are written up separately.
What the CRPF form asks you to upload
There are 3 uploads on this application. Missing any single one of them stops the form from being accepted, so it is worth preparing the lot before you start filling it in. They are:
- A photograph at 3.5 x 4.5 cm, no heavier than 500 KB and no lighter than 50 KB.
- A signature at 3.5 x 1.5 cm, no heavier than 500 KB and no lighter than 50 KB.
- A certificate scan at 8.5 x 11 in, up to 300 KB.
| Item | Size | Unit | Format | Max file size | Min | DPI |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Photo | 3.5 x 4.5 | cm | JPEG | 500 KB | 50 KB | 96 |
| Photo | 3.5 x 4.5 | cm | JPEG | 40 KB | 200 | |
| Signature | 3.5 x 1.5 | cm | JPEG | 500 KB | 50 KB | 96 |
| Signature | 3.5 x 1.5 | cm | JPEG | 500 KB | 50 KB | 200 |
| Document | 8.5 x 11 | in | JPEG | 300 KB | 100 KB | 96 |
The CRPF numbers, and why they matter
The CRPF specification is physical: the table is in centimetres and the resolution requirement is 96 DPI. This is the case where resizing by eye in a phone gallery usually goes wrong, because the same measurement maps to different pixel counts depending on the DPI it is saved at.
Note that the CRPF table is quoted in inches. Nothing else on the site uses this unit, and it means the requirement was written for a printed photograph rather than for a direct upload, which changes how much headroom the crop needs.
Resolution appears more than once in the CRPF record, at 200 and 96 DPI. That is not a contradiction: the physical frame is the same in both, and the choice is how densely the image is stored. Where an advertisement is silent, the 200 DPI row is the safer one, because a denser image still measures correctly at a lower resolution while the reverse is not true.
CRPF sets a floor as well as a ceiling. The photograph has to land between 50 KB and 500 KB, and the signature between 50 KB and 500 KB. A file far below the minimum can fail the portal check even though it is technically under the limit, which is why the tool exposes a minimum field next to the maximum.
There is a further upload on this form, covering a certificate. They sit alongside the photograph rather than replacing it, and each carries its own ceiling, so a file prepared for the portrait is the wrong starting point for them.
If the CRPF application refuses your file
- A CRPF rejection usually comes down to one of two things. Either the file is over 500 KB because the crop left too much empty background, or the photo itself has a non plain background, a tilt, or a filter. Fix the weight first since it is measurable, then the photograph.
- Check the signature separately from the photograph. A 3.5 x 1.5 cm box with a wide margin around the writing will breach the 500 KB ceiling on its own, which is a different fix from anything that applies to the portrait.
- A third attempt with the same settings will produce the same result. Read the current notification again, because the specification is corrected by corrigendum from time to time and the values in this tool follow the specification as recorded.

Frequently Asked Questions
Cropping to a face, choosing a compression level, and the reasons a correctly sized photograph still gets refused do not vary by exam, so those are covered in one place rather than repeated here. Read the complete photo and signature guide.
