What is QR Code

The full form of QR code is Quick Response Code. It is a machine-readable two dimensional barcode made of an array of black and white squares, called modules. Any phone camera reads a QR code in one second, so a QR code saves everyone from typing a long web address, a WiFi password, a phone number, or a payment address by hand.

The data lives inside the pattern itself. That is why a Newisty QR code never expires, never needs a subscription, and keeps working for years, whether it is printed on packaging, shared as a picture on social media, or saved as a print-ready vector file.

What is a QR Code generator?

A QR Code generator is a tool that converts the data you type, such as a link, a contact, a WiFi login, a meeting, or a location, into a scannable QR code image. This free online QR code generator gives you the full premium feature set in one place: 19 QR code data types, complete design control, a logo, a label, 11 output formats, and a built-in QR code reader. There is no app to install, no sign-up, no watermark, and no expiry date.

Use it to build a landing page QR for a marketing campaign, a vCard QR for a conference badge, a WiFi QR for a cafe menu or a guest room, a restaurant menu QR for a table tent, a crypto payment QR for an invoice, a Zoom meeting QR, or an event QR that drops the meeting straight into a guest calendar. You can also upload an existing QR code image and decode it back into plain text.

Why QR Code is very important

QR codes matter to businesses because they let customers reach information instantly. A shopper who sees a product they like but cannot remember the name can scan the code on the pack and open the product page right away, without typing or searching.

Businesses also use QR codes on menus, posters, packaging, and marketing material to send people to a brochure, a video, a landing page, or a feedback form. Because you can build a different code for every channel, campaign, or customer, you can also learn which poster, table, or leaflet actually worked.

QR codes are used far beyond marketing. They store tickets, event details, travel information, restaurant menus, WiFi logins, video calls, contact details, and cryptocurrency payment addresses. A printed code in a shop window or a guest room keeps working for the whole life of the print, with zero hosting cost.

Full QR Code design customization

Change the QR code and background colors, set the pixel size from 100 to 1000 px, add a 0 to 100 px margin, and pick the error correction level L, M, Q, or H. Module Effects let you switch on round modules with a circle radius slider, connect paths, keep finders square, draw light modules, invert colors, a transparent PNG background, a 1 to 100 quality value, and a custom SVG CSS class. For a call to action you can add a label with its own font, font size, color, and alignment. For branding you can add and resize your own logo. You can download your QR code in 11 formats: PNG, JPG, SVG, WebP, GIF, BMP, EPS, HTML, XML, JSON, and Text.

Add Logo for Branding

Add your business logo to the centre of the QR code. Choose a ready logo such as Facebook, WhatsApp, YouTube, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Instagram, Email, Website, WiFi, Zoom, or Share, or upload your own JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, or BMP image. Set the logo size from 5% to 40% and give the logo a custom background color when your logo is not square.

100% free for personal and commercial uses

Every QR code created here is 100% free for personal and commercial use. We never add a watermark and we never ask you for an attribution or a credit link.

Use your QR Code for a lifetime

You can use the generated QR code for a lifetime. No expiry date applies, no monthly plan applies, and the code keeps working as long as the print, poster, or packaging exists.
LABEL

Call to Action label

Add a call to action under your QR code with your own words, such as Scan Me, Scan for WiFi, Follow us, Rate us, Call me, or Message me. You get multiple fonts to choose from, plus label text alignment, color, and font size control, with a live preview before you generate.

11 output and download formats

Download the same QR code as PNG, JPG, SVG, WebP, GIF, BMP, EPS, HTML, XML, JSON, or plain Text. PNG for screens and social posts, SVG and EPS for sharp print, HTML, XML, and JSON for developers and automated pipelines, and Text when you only need the encoded string.

Built-in QR Code reader

The QR Reader panel works in the opposite direction. Upload any QR code image in PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF, or BMP format and click Decode QR Code to reveal the hidden text, then copy it with one click. Use it to check a code before printing, to audit a poster you do not control, or to move data from a printed code into your own system.

Data privacy and security

Your connection to this tool is protected by TLS and SSL. Your data is used only to render your QR code at that moment, and we do not store or reuse your content. Please remember that a QR code itself is not encrypted, so never put passwords, ID numbers, or private records inside one.

All 19 QR Code types explained

Choose a type from the QR Type panel, fill in only the fields that type needs, and the tool builds the correct payload string for you. You never have to encode anything by hand.

  • URL: Any website, landing page, or short link. The everyday choice for print campaigns, packaging, posters, and menu boards.
  • Text: Plain notes, instructions, serial numbers, or a short message in any language.
  • Email: Opens a new email with the recipient, the subject, and the message already filled in.
  • vCard: A digital contact card with first name, last name, mobile, phone, fax, email, company, job title, street, city, ZIP, state, country, and website. Scanning saves the contact with one tap.
  • SMS: Starts a text message to a number with an optional pre-written message.
  • Call: Dials a phone number instantly. Useful for shop windows, reception desks, and service points.
  • Event: Adds an event to the guest calendar with start date and time, end date and time, title, description, location, and public, private, or confidential visibility.
  • Location: Opens a map pin from decimal latitude and longitude, where positive values mean north and east and negative values mean south and west.
  • WiFi: Guest login QR with network name, password, WPA/WPA2, WEP, or open network, plus a hidden network flag for networks that do not broadcast their name.
  • Crypto: Payment QR for Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, and Dash, with an optional amount and an optional payment note.
  • Facebook: Links a Facebook page or a specific post.
  • WhatsApp: Opens a chat with a phone number that includes the country code, with an optional pre-filled message.
  • YouTube: Links a channel or a video.
  • Instagram: Links a profile by username, or a specific post by URL.
  • Twitter: Links a profile, or opens the compose window with your tweet text already written, up to 280 characters.
  • LinkedIn: Shares a profile, company, or post URL with an optional message.
  • Pinterest: Links a pin, with an optional description and an optional thumbnail image URL.
  • Telegram: Shares any link with an optional message.
  • Zoom: Joins a meeting by ID and password, using the plain web link, the PC app deep link, or the mobile app deep link, and optionally shows a display name.

Design, module effects, and every setting explained

  • Size (px): Set the output size from 100 px up to 1000 px. Use a small size for screen sharing and a large size for print.
  • Margin (px): Add 0 to 100 px of clear space around the code. This quiet zone is what lets a scanner lock on, so keep it above zero for printing.
  • QR Color and Background: Pick any foreground and background color. Strong contrast, such as a dark code on a light background, always scans best.
  • Error Correction Level: L recovers about 7% of the code, M about 15%, Q about 25%, and H about 30%. Higher levels survive damage and logos, but they create a denser, busier pattern.
  • Round Modules: Draw each dark module as a circle, then fine-tune the circle radius with the slider for a softer look.
  • Connect Paths: Merge neighbouring dark modules into smooth connected shapes.
  • Keep Finders Square: Keep the three position finder patterns square while the data area uses the rounded or connected style.
  • Draw Light Modules: Fill the light modules as well, for a solid designed look.
  • Invert Colors: Flip the dark and light modules for a light-code-on-dark-background design.
  • Transparent BG: Remove the background fill and export a see-through PNG, which is ideal for placing the code on a colored banner or a product photo.
  • Quality (1 to 100): Sets the quality of the compressed outputs such as JPG and WebP.
  • SVG CSS Class: Add your own class name to the exported SVG so you can restyle the code from your website CSS.

Add a label as a call to action

The Label panel adds a caption under your QR code. Type the text, choose one of the bundled fonts, set the font size from 8 to 48, choose left, center, or right alignment, and pick the text color. A live preview shows the exact font, size, and color before you generate. Labels such as Scan Me, Scan for WiFi, Follow us, Rate us, or Message me turn a plain black and white code into a designed call to action that people are more likely to scan.

How to generate a premium QR Code free online

  1. Open this QR code generator and pick your data type from the QR Type panel. There are 19 types: URL, Text, Email, vCard, SMS, Call, Event, Location, WiFi, Crypto, Facebook, WhatsApp, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Telegram, and Zoom.
  2. Fill in the fields of the active type. Only the fields of the selected type are used, so the form stays short and clean.
  3. From the Design and Format panel, adjust the QR code size, the margin, the QR code color, the background color, the error correction level, and the output format.
  4. Open the Module Effects panel to switch on round modules with a circle radius, connect paths, keep finders square, draw light modules, invert colors, or a transparent background, and to set the quality value or your SVG CSS class.
  5. Open the Logo panel for branding. Choose a predefined logo or upload your own image, set the logo size percentage, and optionally switch on the logo background and pick its color. When a logo is used, the error correction level is raised automatically so the code still scans.
  6. Open the Label panel if you want a caption, then add the label text, the font, the font size, the alignment, and the label color.
  7. Click Generate QR Code. The result appears in the QR Output panel together with the type, the format, and the pixel size.
  8. Click Download to save the file on your device, or click Copy URL to copy the encoded content as text.
  9. Test the generated code with two or three different phones before you print a large batch.
  10. To read an existing code, open the QR Reader panel, upload any QR code image, click Decode QR Code, and copy the decoded text.

Which error correction level should you choose?

Error correction is what allows a QR code to survive a logo, a sticker, a scratch, or partial covering. Low (L) recovers about 7% of the code and gives the cleanest, simplest pattern, so it suits clean screens. Medium (M) recovers about 15% and is a good default for on-screen use. Quartile (Q) recovers about 25% and suits branded codes with a logo. High (H) recovers about 30% and is the safest choice for printed stickers, packaging, and outdoor use, but it produces the densest pattern. If your code will not scan after printing, raise the error correction level before you change anything else.

Which download format should you use?

  • PNG: The recommended default for websites, chat sharing, and social media. It also supports the transparent background option.
  • JPG: Smallest file for email attachments and documents, but it has no transparency.
  • SVG: Vector file that stays sharp at any size. The best choice for business cards, flyers, and large print.
  • WebP: Modern web format with a small file size and good quality.
  • GIF: Bitmap format for publishing tools and simple graphics work.
  • BMP: Uncompressed bitmap for Windows and legacy desktop software.
  • EPS: Print-ready vector format for professional prepress and offset printing.
  • HTML: A self-contained HTML file that draws the QR with HTML and CSS elements, previewed live before you download it.
  • XML: Machine-readable XML module map for developers and custom renderers.
  • JSON: Structured JSON output, useful for automated pipelines and custom design tools.
  • Text: The plain encoded QR string, handy for debugging, documentation, or re-encoding somewhere else.

Tips for a QR code that actually scans

  • Keep the foreground and background high contrast. A dark code on a light background is the most reliable combination.
  • Keep the margin on. A code printed flush to the edge of a sticker or a label often fails to scan.
  • Keep the logo small, 20% or less of the whole code, and use a high error correction level with it.
  • Do not use round modules, inverted colors, or drawn light modules for very small or distant codes. Those styles suit larger, close-up scanning.
  • Print SVG or EPS for anything bigger than a business card, and never enlarge a small JPG, because scaling turns the modules blurry and scanners fail.
  • Avoid photos, gradients, or busy patterns behind the code. Use a flat, light background instead.
  • Test on both iPhone and Android, in the lighting and at the distance where your customers will really scan.

Limitations and safety to keep in mind

  • A QR code is not encrypted. The content is readable by anyone who scans or decodes it, so never put passwords, ID numbers, or private records inside one.
  • A WiFi QR code shares the network password with every scanner. Change the WiFi password if a guest code leaks.
  • A crypto QR code shows the wallet address to everyone who scans it. Always confirm the address in your wallet app before you send funds.
  • Your data is sent to the server only to render the code at that moment and is not stored, which is why codes never expire. That does not hide the content from a scanner.
  • Very long text, a long vCard, or a long message pushes the QR code to a denser version with tiny modules. Shorten the payload instead of shrinking the code.
  • The QR reader decodes one QR code from one uploaded image. It cannot repair a damaged code, read barcodes, or undo heavy blur.

Where people use QR codes, by situation

QR codes earn their place in a design only when the scan saves the visitor real effort. Here are the situations where a QR code is used most often, together with the type that works best for each one.

  • Restaurant menus: A URL QR code on a table tent or window sticker replaces printed menus that go out of date. Update the link any time and the printed card stays valid.
  • Guest WiFi: A WiFi QR code on a reception desk or in a hotel room lets guests join the network without typing a password. Pair it with a label such as Scan for WiFi.
  • Business cards: A vCard QR code saves a full contact with name, company, job title, phone, email, website, and address in one scan, and it never runs out of space like a printed card.
  • Event badges and invitations: An Event QR code adds the session straight to the guest calendar, including the time, place, and description. A Zoom QR code joins online meetings from the same badge.
  • Packaging and product labels: A URL QR code opens the product page, the manual, or the warranty registration form. High error correction and vector output keep it readable on rough material.
  • Shop windows and posters: A Location QR code opens the map pin, so nobody has to type the address. A Call QR code dials your number directly.
  • Payment requests: A Crypto QR code carries the wallet address with an optional amount and note, which removes a long copy and paste job and avoids typing mistakes.
  • Social profiles and follow campaigns: Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, Pinterest, Telegram, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, and Twitter QR codes turn a printed surface into a direct follow or chat action.
  • Schools and workshops: A shared resource QR code links to slides, worksheets, or a video lesson, and you can update the material without reprinting.
  • Portfolio and resume links: One QR code can open your portfolio, your LinkedIn profile, or your vCard contact details.

Popular QR code recipes

These are the fastest, most requested setups. Follow the field list for your chosen type and press Generate QR Code.

  • Guest WiFi QR: Select WiFi, then enter the Network Name (SSID) and the Password, choose WPA/WPA2 for a modern router, WEP for an old one, or None for an open network, tick Hidden Network if your router does not broadcast its name, and add the label Scan for WiFi. Anyone who scans it joins the network without typing.
  • Digital business card: Select vCard and fill in First Name, Last Name, Mobile, Phone, Email, Company, Job Title, Street, City, ZIP, State, Country, and Website. A scanning phone offers to save the contact with all fields already filled in.
  • Table menu QR: Select URL, enter your menu link, set the size to 500 px or more, keep a margin of at least 10 px, and download SVG or EPS if you are sending it to a printer. Add the label Scan the Menu.
  • Crypto payment QR: Select Crypto, choose Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, or Dash, paste the wallet address, optionally add the Amount and a Message, and generate. Always test the address in your own wallet app before you print it.
  • Zoom meeting QR: Select Zoom, choose Any, PC, or Mobile, then enter the Meeting ID, the Password, and the Display Name. Scanning with a phone opens the meeting app with everything already filled in.
  • Event QR: Select Event, set the Start Date and Time and the End Date and Time, add the Event Title, a Description, the Location, and the Visibility. Scanning adds the event to the calendar with a reminder.
  • Feedback or scan-tracking QR: Select URL and point it to your own landing page with a UTM tag, such as https://example.com/menu?utm_source=qr_poster&utm_medium=qr. Different posters or table tents can then be compared in your own analytics.
  • Branded QR with a logo: Pick your type, open the Logo panel, choose or upload the logo, set the logo size to 20% or less, add a logo background color if your logo is not square, then generate. The error correction level rises to High automatically.

How to make a QR code that prints perfectly

  • Choose SVG or EPS for anything printed. Vector output scales to a business card, a poster, or a billboard without losing sharp module edges.
  • Use PNG only when a printer needs a raster file, and generate it at the final print size. A PNG made at 100 px and enlarged will blur and fail to scan.
  • Keep the margin. A quiet zone of 8 to 20 px at web size is normal, and stickers need more. If a code sits on the edge of a label, printing may crop the margin and break scanning.
  • Use flat, light backgrounds. Ink-heavy black blocks on dark paper and glossy photo paper cause glare that blocks the camera.
  • Set the error correction to High for outdoor, packaging, and sticker use, because those surfaces get dirty, scratched, and folded.
  • Print at 100% scale. Do not stretch the image to fill a box, and do not let a print shop crop the edges.
  • Test the printed piece. After printing, scan it with a normal phone at the distance your customer will use. If it fails, the usual fix is a larger size, a higher error correction level, or SVG instead of JPG.

Why is my QR code not scanning? Check these things

  • Not enough contrast. A dark code on a light background scans; a light code on a dark background often fails unless you use the Invert Colors option and test it first.
  • No quiet zone. If the margin is 0 and the code touches the edge of the image or the sticker, scanners struggle. Add margin.
  • The code is too small on screen. If the whole code is smaller than about 2 cm on screen and people scan from a distance, the code is unreadable. Increase the size or reduce the amount of data.
  • The design style is too fancy. Round modules, connected paths, drawn light modules, and inverted colors work well on large codes but break down on small ones. For a small code, turn the effects off and keep the standard look.
  • The logo is too large. Keep the logo at 20% or less of the code, and use a high error correction level.
  • The file was scaled badly. Never upscale a small JPG or a screenshot. Regenerate at the size you need, or download SVG.
  • The payload is too long. Long URLs with tracking parameters, long vCards, or long messages create dense codes. Shorten the URL or trim the content.
  • The wrong format was used for the medium. Use PNG for transparency and screen, JPG for simple documents, SVG or EPS for print, and never print the HTML, XML, JSON, or Text output as an image.
  • The preview itself is fine but the file is not. If the QR code looks sharp in the output panel but the downloaded file does not scan, regenerate it at a larger size and check the file size, because a very small file often means very few modules.

Static QR codes, dynamic QR codes, and scan tracking

Every code from this tool is a static QR code, which means the destination is written inside the pattern itself. Nothing runs in the background, no monthly service is needed, and the code cannot expire or break. What you give up is built-in scan analytics. If you need to know how many people scanned, point the URL type at your own landing page and add tracking parameters such as utm_source and utm_medium to the link. Each poster, table, or package can then have its own link, and your existing analytics or hosting logs will count the visits for you. Dynamic QR codes with a redirect service and a monthly price are usually unnecessary for a simple website, menu, or contact QR code, but a tracking link is enough when you want to compare two printed locations.
