CTR Calculator

What click-through rate measures

Click-through rate, or CTR, is the share of impressions that produced a click. It is one of the most familiar advertising and email metrics because it connects how often a message was shown with how often someone acted on it. This calculator takes clicks and impressions and returns a percentage. It also shows a simple quality band and a summary sentence. The calculation is instant and runs in your browser, so no campaign data is uploaded.

The CTR formula

CTR equals clicks divided by impressions, multiplied by 100. If an ad receives 120 clicks from 4,000 impressions, the CTR is 3 percent. The calculator displays two decimal places. Impressions are the number of times the ad or link was displayed, not the number of unique people. A single person can generate several impressions. Clicks may also include repeated clicks from the same person unless the platform deduplicates them.

How to use the calculator

Enter the number of clicks and the number of impressions. The result updates as you change either field and also runs once on page load. The default values are 120 clicks and 4,000 impressions, which produce 3.00 percent. Replace them with a single campaign, ad set or email send. Do not combine clicks from one period with impressions from another, because the ratio will not describe either period.

Reading the quality label

The page labels a CTR of 5 percent or more as Excellent, 2 percent or more as Good, 1 percent or more as Average, and anything below 1 percent as Low. These are rough orientation bands, not universal benchmarks. CTR varies by placement, audience, creative, industry and device. A search ad, a display banner and an email link have very different typical rates. Compare against your own history before treating a label as a verdict.

Impressions, reach and clicks

Impressions count displays. Reach counts unique people or accounts. Clicks count interactions, but a click can be accidental, duplicated or automated. A high CTR with a low conversion rate can mean the creative attracted the wrong audience or the landing page did not deliver. A low CTR with a high conversion rate can mean a narrow, highly qualified audience. Keep the full funnel in view.

Why CTR can exceed 100 percent

The form does not stop you from entering more clicks than impressions. That produces a CTR above 100 percent, which usually means the inputs came from different sources or definitions. Some platforms report clicks that include interactions not counted as impressions, or the date ranges differ. Recheck the numbers before using an impossible ratio in a report. The calculator does not validate the relationship for you.

What a good CTR depends on

Placement matters: a search result, a social feed, a display banner and an email inbox are different contexts. Creative matters: a clear promise and a relevant image usually beat a generic message. Audience matters: a warm list often responds better than cold traffic. Device and format matter too. A mobile feed ad and a desktop sidebar are not directly comparable. Segment the data before drawing conclusions.

Improving CTR without misleading

Make the first line specific and relevant to the audience. Match the ad promise to the landing page. Test one variable at a time, such as the headline, image or call to action. Avoid clickbait that produces clicks but no conversions; it can raise CTR while damaging trust and downstream results. Check frequency and fatigue. A campaign that has been shown to the same audience for weeks may need new creative rather than a bigger budget.

Limits and edge cases

Impressions have a minimum of one. A blank or zero impression field is treated as one, which can make a small number of clicks look huge. Negative or non-numeric values are treated as zero. Clicks are not forced to be whole numbers, and there is no upper limit. The tool does not account for viewability, invalid traffic, unique users or platform-specific definitions. A CTR from one platform should not be compared directly with another.

Reporting the result

State the platform, date range, placement and definition of a click. A percentage without context is easy to misread. If you are comparing campaigns, use the same date window and the same attribution setting. Keep the raw clicks and impressions beside the percentage so a reader can check the math. For a dashboard, show CTR alongside conversion rate, cost per click and revenue, not as a standalone score.

Privacy and data

The calculation is local. The click and impression numbers are not sent to Newisty. Your campaign data remains in the ad platform and your analytics tools. If you paste numbers from a report, check that the report uses the same time zone and attribution window as the rest of your analysis. A small definition mismatch can change the percentage more than a creative change.

What not to do

Do not compare CTR across unrelated placements without context. Do not treat a high CTR as proof of sales. Do not ignore invalid traffic or accidental clicks. Do not mix clicks from one campaign with impressions from another. Do not use the quality label as an industry benchmark. Do not hide a low conversion rate behind a strong CTR, and do not chase clicks with misleading creative.

A note on attribution: a click may be counted when a user taps a link even if the page never loads. Check the platform's attribution window and whether it counts repeat clicks. Two reports can show different CTRs for the same creative because they define a click differently. Record the definition beside the number so a later comparison is honest.

Worked example: when the higher CTR loses

Two ads each receive 10,000 impressions. Ad A gets 300 clicks, a CTR of 3.00 percent, and 6 of those visitors buy, a 2 percent conversion rate. Ad B gets 180 clicks, a CTR of 1.80 percent, and 9 buy, a 5 percent conversion rate. Ad A wins on CTR, but Ad B produced more sales from the same impressions, and under cost-per-click pricing it also needed fewer paid clicks to do it.

A quick way to compare variations on equal terms is to multiply CTR by conversion rate. That gives conversions per impression: 3% × 2% = 0.06% for Ad A and 1.8% × 5% = 0.09% for Ad B. Use this calculator for the first figure, then pull the conversion counts from your analytics.

Organic search CTR

The same formula works for unpaid search listings. Search console tools report clicks and impressions for each page and query, so you can enter them here to find titles and descriptions that are seen often but rarely clicked. A page with many impressions and a CTR well below its neighbours is a good candidate for a clearer title or meta description. Remember that average position strongly affects organic CTR, so compare pages that rank in similar positions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Veelgestelde vragen

Korte antwoorden op de vragen die gebruikers stellen voordat ze het resultaat vertrouwen.

CTR is click-through rate: clicks divided by impressions, multiplied by 100. It shows how often a displayed ad or link produced a click. It does not measure whether the click led to a sale or a meaningful action.

Divide clicks by impressions and multiply by 100. For example, 120 clicks from 4,000 impressions give 3 percent. The calculator shows two decimal places and also displays the raw inputs.

There is no universal good rate. The page labels 5 percent or more Excellent, 2 percent or more Good, 1 percent or more Average and below 1 percent Low. Compare with your own placements and history, not a generic benchmark.

The form does not enforce clicks being less than impressions. A value above 100 percent usually means the inputs use different date ranges or definitions. Recheck the source reports before using the result.

No. Impressions count displays; reach counts unique people or accounts. One person can see an ad several times. CTR uses impressions, so it is not a unique-person rate.

No. It uses the clicks you enter. Platform reports may include accidental, duplicate or automated clicks. Check the platform's invalid-traffic filtering and use the same definition across campaigns.

You can calculate both, but they are different contexts. Email clicks are usually measured against delivered messages, while ad clicks are measured against impressions. Compare within the same channel and use the platform's definitions.

Yes. Enter the clicks and impressions your search console reports for a page or query. The formula is the same as for ads.

The more the better. With a few hundred impressions, one or two clicks move the rate noticeably, so wait for a few thousand impressions per variation before comparing.
