PNG to BMP Image Converter

PNG to BMP Converter produces a bitmap for legacy Windows, industrial or embedded software. Resize before conversion, then test the file on the destination device.

What this page does

This page converts an image to BMP. The output opens on BMP, and the page supports multiple files, a quality setting and optional resizing. The server writes a bitmap for each upload and returns a download.

It is named PNG to BMP, but the uploader accepts the common raster formats. The useful question is not how to get a BMP, but whether the destination actually needs one. BMP is a legacy format with a very specific role.

BMP in legacy workflows

BMP is simple and predictable. Older Windows programs, industrial controllers, label designers, embedded displays and some game engines can read a bitmap without a complex decoder. That is why a modern workflow sometimes still asks for BMP.

It is not a format for the open web. A BMP is usually much larger than a PNG, and browsers may display it without treating it as an optimised image. If a portal accepts PNG, use PNG.

File size

BMP commonly stores pixels with little or no compression. A 4000 by 3000 photo can become tens of megabytes, even if the PNG source was a few megabytes. The quality slider will not change that as dramatically as it changes a JPEG.

Resize before conversion when the destination has a fixed screen or print size. Sending a huge bitmap to a device that displays 800 by 480 pixels wastes space and may exceed its storage or transfer limit.

Check the free space on the destination before converting a batch. A folder of uncompressed bitmaps can fill a small drive quickly.

Transparency and colour

PNG supports alpha; BMP support for transparency is inconsistent. Many BMP variants and readers ignore an alpha channel, and some tools flatten it to a solid colour. Do not assume a transparent PNG will remain transparent after conversion.

If the image needs transparency, test the actual BMP on the target program. If that program cannot handle alpha, place the subject on the background colour it will use before converting.

BMP can store different bit depths and colour layouts. A reader that expects one variant may reject another even though both are called BMP. If the destination is picky, check its documentation or test a small file first.

Quality and resizing

The quality control is mainly relevant to lossy formats. BMP is generally lossless or lightly compressed, so the pixel dimensions dominate the file size. Use the resize options to set an exact width and height when the destination requires them.

Physical units and DPI are available if the target is print-related, but DPI is metadata. A 300-pixel image is still 300 pixels at any DPI. Set enough pixels for the output size, then set the DPI the device expects.

Batch workflow

Add the files, keep BMP selected, set the resize options and process. Each file is handled separately; download the results one by one. There is no ZIP bundle.

Test one file on the destination device before converting the whole set. A format that opens in one BMP reader may fail in another, and a batch of large files is painful to redo.

When not to use BMP

Do not use BMP for websites, email, cloud galleries or long-term photo archives. PNG is a better lossless choice for graphics, JPEG for photos, and WebP for efficient web delivery. BMP is a compatibility format, not a general-purpose one.

If you need a lossless file for print, TIFF or PNG is usually more practical. If you need a small file, BMP is the wrong direction.

Limits and privacy

Files are uploaded for server-side conversion. Do not send private documents or client images to a public converter. The page does not offer a local-only mode and does not keep a gallery.

Large images and long batches can hit upload or memory limits. Keep the PNG originals until the BMPs have been opened on the destination system.

Choosing the right BMP variant

If the destination documentation names a bit depth or a compression mode, follow it. A 24-bit uncompressed bitmap is the common baseline for legacy Windows tools; a 32-bit file may carry alpha that some readers ignore. When the documentation is silent, test a small file and inspect it in the target program.

Do not assume that a file which opens in one editor will open in a device. BMP readers vary, and an embedded system may have a fixed buffer, a colour limit or a maximum dimension.

Preparing files for embedded displays

Start from the display resolution, not from the camera resolution. A 128 by 64 display does not benefit from a 4000-pixel photo; it only makes the file larger and the transfer slower. Crop to the screen ratio and resize to the exact dimensions before converting.

Check the colour depth and the background. A photo may look muddy on a limited palette, and a transparent logo may flatten onto black. Test on the device, not only in a desktop viewer.

Archive and transfer

BMP is a poor archive format because it is large. Keep the PNG or the original photo as the master, and treat the BMP as a build artifact for the device. If you need to transfer a batch, compress the folder or copy it directly; do not email a set of uncompressed bitmaps.

BMP versus PNG

Both can store an image without lossy compression, but PNG is far more efficient for most graphics. PNG uses compression and supports alpha cleanly. BMP is simpler and larger. Choose BMP only when a reader requires it.

If you are archiving, keep PNG. If you are feeding a legacy device, build a BMP from the PNG and keep the PNG as the master. That way a future device or format change does not require starting from a degraded copy.

Common failure signs

A file that opens on the desktop but not on the device may have the wrong variant, an unsupported colour depth or dimensions beyond the device limit. A file that opens but looks wrong may have a colour or alpha mismatch. A file that is accepted but slow to transfer is probably larger than the device needs.

Test one file at the real destination before converting the batch, and note the settings that worked.

Write down the dimensions, colour depth and reader version that worked, so the next batch does not repeat the same test. Keep a short written note for the next person.

Frequently Asked Questions

Veelgestelde vragen

Korte antwoorden op de vragen die gebruikers stellen voordat ze het resultaat vertrouwen.

No. It changes the container. The pixels come from the PNG, and BMP does not add detail.

BMP usually stores pixels with little or no compression. File size is dominated by width times height.

Not reliably. Many BMP readers ignore alpha. Test on the destination program.

Not much. Resize the image if you need a smaller bitmap.

Yes. Add multiple files and process them together.

No. Use JPEG, PNG or WebP instead.

No. Download each file separately.

Yes, for processing. Avoid public converters for private images.
