What the counter measures

This page counts words, characters with and without spaces, sentences and paragraphs. It also estimates reading time at 200 words per minute and speaking time at 130 words per minute, calculates the average word length and lists the ten most frequent keywords with their share of the total word count.

The numbers update as you type or paste. There is no submit step and no account, so the counter works as a live writing aid rather than a one-off report.

Three ways to load text

You can type directly into the box, paste an article, or drop a file onto the page. Plain .txt files are read as text, and .docx files are parsed in the browser with a Word extraction library. PDF, .doc and rich-text files are not supported; convert them to .docx or plain text first.

The third option is a webpage URL. The server fetches the HTML, removes navigation, header, footer, aside, script, style, SVG and iframe elements, and returns the remaining body text. That gives a cleaner count than selecting the whole page by hand, but it is still an approximation of the visible article.

How words, sentences and paragraphs are counted

Words are split on whitespace, so hyphenated compounds count as one word and a spaced dash can create extra words. Sentences are split on full stops, question marks and exclamation marks. Paragraphs are separated by a blank line; a block of text with no blank line counts as one paragraph.

These rules are simple and fast, but they are not linguistic. Abbreviations such as Dr. or e.g. can create a false sentence break, URLs and code can inflate the word count, and Chinese, Japanese or Thai text is not segmented into words the way English is.

Reading time, speaking time and average length

Reading time is the word count divided by 200 and rounded up to the next minute. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute and is also rounded up. Both are planning estimates for an average adult; a technical document, a script with pauses or a fast presenter will differ.

Average word length is the number of letters and digits in the counted words divided by the word count, shown to one decimal place. It is a rough readability signal, not a grade level.

Keyword density

The keyword list lowercases each word, removes punctuation, ignores words of two characters or fewer and filters a short English stoplist such as the, and, for and with. The remaining words are ranked by frequency and the top ten are shown with their percentage of all words.

This is a frequency table, not an SEO difficulty score. A high percentage for a word does not make a page rank, and repeating a phrase to raise the number usually makes the writing worse.

Why the numbers matter

Word and character counts are practical limits before they are style signals. A meta description, a social post, an abstract, a speech slot and an academic submission all impose a length. Counting before you edit saves a second rewrite after the limit is rejected.

They are not a quality score. A clear 300-word answer can be more useful than a padded 1,500-word page, and a keyword-dense article can still be hard to read. Use the numbers as constraints, then judge the writing separately.

Characters with and without spaces

The difference between the two character cards is whitespace: spaces, tabs and line breaks. Character-with-spaces is the figure most publishing forms mean, while character-without-spaces is useful for dense identifiers or storage limits.

The counter uses the browser's string length, which counts some characters as two units. Emoji and characters outside the basic plane can therefore add more to the character total than they appear to. Word and sentence counts are not affected by that detail.

Keeping a consistent count

Use the same tool and the same input for before-and-after comparisons. Decide whether headings, captions, footnotes and references belong in the count, and remove navigation or boilerplate before counting a webpage. A count that silently includes a cookie banner or a related-posts block is worse than no count.

What it does not do

It is not Google's word count, a readability grader, a plagiarism checker or a grammar checker. It does not count words in images, embedded videos, comments loaded by JavaScript or content behind a login. A URL fetch returns the server's HTML, so a page that renders its article in the browser may return little text.

The fetch endpoint also caps the returned content at 200,000 characters. Very long pages are truncated before counting, and the page does not warn you when that happens.

Privacy and limits

Typed text and uploaded .txt or .docx files are processed in the browser; they are not sent to the server. A URL you submit is sent to the server so it can fetch the page, and the fetched HTML passes through the server before the text is counted.

Do not paste confidential documents into a public tool if the content is sensitive. For private drafts, use the file input and keep the document on your own machine.

Step by step

  1. Paste or type your text, or drop a .txt or .docx file.
  2. Alternatively, enter a full webpage URL and press Count Webpage.
  3. Read the word, character, sentence and paragraph cards.
  4. Check the reading and speaking estimates against your audience.
  5. Review the keyword list for unintended repetition.
  6. Edit the text and watch the numbers update.

Counts vary with language and formatting. A page written in Chinese or Japanese may count as very few words because there are no spaces, while a page full of short code tokens can count as many. When a client gives a limit, confirm whether it includes spaces, headings, captions and references, then use the same definition from draft to final. The tool cannot know that context; it only applies the rules above.

If you only need a rough estimate, round the number and say so; a precise-looking count with an unclear definition is more misleading than an approximate one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Veelgestelde vragen

Korte antwoorden op de vragen die gebruikers stellen voordat ze het resultaat vertrouwen.

Not always. Word has its own rules for hyphenated words, symbols and text boxes. This page splits on whitespace, so the totals can differ by a few words.

No. The file input accepts .txt and .docx only. Convert the PDF to .docx or copy the text into the box.

The fetch removes navigation, headers, footers, scripts and iframes, and the server does not run JavaScript. Content rendered after load may be missing.

It divides the word count by 200 words per minute and rounds up. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute.

A segment ending in a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark. Abbreviations and decimal points can create false breaks.

No. They are the ten most frequent non-stop words and their percentage of the text. They do not measure difficulty or ranking potential.

No. Pasted text and .txt or .docx files stay in the browser. Only a URL you submit is sent to the server for fetching.
