What this page does

This page converts an image to BMP. The output format opens on BMP, and you can add several files, set a quality level and optionally resize before processing. The server writes a bitmap file for each upload and returns a download.

Although the page is named JPEG to BMP, the uploader accepts the usual raster inputs, including JPG, JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP, JFIF, JIFF and BMP. The intended result is a BMP file, so the source format matters less than what the destination can open.

What BMP is good for

BMP is an old, simple bitmap format. It stores pixel data with little or no compression, which makes it easy for small programs, embedded devices and legacy Windows tools to read. That simplicity is why it still appears in industrial software, old documentation pipelines and a few device workflows.

It is not a web format. A BMP is usually much larger than the same image as JPEG, PNG or WebP, and browsers may display it but will not optimise it. Use BMP only when a specific program or device asks for it.

Why convert JPEG to BMP

A JPEG has already been compressed. Converting it to BMP does not restore the detail that was lost; it only stores the decoded pixels in a less compressed container. The image may look identical, but the file can grow many times over.

The usual reason to convert is compatibility: an older editor, a label printer, a game tool or an internal system accepts only BMP. Another reason is to hand a simple bitmap to a workflow that cannot decode JPEG. Neither reason makes BMP a better archive than the original JPEG.

If you are converting for editing, keep the JPEG and edit a copy. Saving the BMP back to JPEG later will add another round of compression.

Quality and transparency

The quality slider is mainly meaningful for lossy formats. BMP is typically stored without lossy compression, so lowering quality will not produce the same gradual size reduction you see with JPEG. The pixel dimensions are the main driver of file size.

JPEG has no transparency, so a JPEG source cannot become a transparent BMP. If the source is a PNG with alpha, do not assume the BMP output keeps it; many BMP variants and readers ignore alpha. Check the result on the destination system if transparency matters.

Batch conversion

Add the files, keep BMP selected, set any resize options and process. Each card shows progress and a download. There is no ZIP archive, so save each file individually.

Use one test file first. A large photo can turn into a bitmap of tens of megabytes, and a batch of them can fill a folder quickly. Resize before conversion if the destination does not need the original dimensions.

Name the outputs clearly. A folder of BMP files with the same base name as the JPEGs is easy to confuse with the originals.

When not to use BMP

Do not use BMP for a website, an email attachment or a cloud gallery. The file is too large and offers no advantage over PNG for lossless graphics or JPEG for photos. Do not use it as a long-term archive unless the destination requires it; PNG or TIFF is a better lossless choice for most work.

If you only need a format that every browser accepts, use JPEG or PNG. If you need small files for the web, use WebP or JPEG.

Limits and privacy

Files are uploaded for server-side conversion. Do not send identity documents or confidential images to a public converter. The page does not offer a local-only mode and does not keep a gallery of results.

Very large images and long batches can hit upload or memory limits. Split the batch if processing stalls, and keep the originals until the BMPs have been checked on the destination device.

BMP variants and readers

BMP is a family of layouts, not one fixed file. Bitmaps can use different bit depths, colour tables and compression modes. A program that reads one variant may reject another even though both carry the .bmp extension. If the destination names a specific variant, test a small file before converting a batch.

Older Windows tools often expect a simple uncompressed bitmap. Industrial software may be stricter about dimensions or colour depth. When a file fails, the problem is often the variant or the size, not the image content.

Preparing an image for a device

Start from the exact pixel size the device displays. Resizing after conversion adds another step, and a huge bitmap can exceed the device memory or storage. Crop to the screen ratio before converting if the destination has a fixed frame.

Check the colour requirements. A device with a limited palette may not reproduce a smooth photo, and a transparent PNG may flatten onto an unexpected background. A quick test on the real device is worth more than any general guide.

Conversion checklist

Confirm the destination accepts BMP, set the correct dimensions, test one file, then convert the batch. Keep the JPEG originals, label the BMP copies clearly, and delete the bitmaps after the device or legacy program has accepted them if storage is tight.

Colour depth and file size

A 24-bit bitmap stores three bytes per pixel, one each for red, green and blue. A 32-bit bitmap adds a fourth byte that may be used for alpha. A 1000 by 1000 image therefore needs roughly three or four megabytes before any header or padding, which explains why bitmaps grow so quickly.

If the destination accepts a lower colour depth, the file can shrink, but the image may show banding. Check the requirement before choosing a lower depth; a smaller file that the device displays badly is not a win.

Row padding can add a little more size when the width is not a multiple of four bytes. That overhead is small compared with the pixel data, but it is another reason the final bytes do not exactly match a simple width-times-height calculation.

If the destination specifies a 32-bit bitmap, test the alpha channel before converting the whole set; a reader may accept the file and still ignore transparency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Najczęściej zadawane pytania

Krótkie odpowiedzi na pytania, które użytkownicy zadają, zanim zaufają wynikowi.

No. It stores the decoded pixels in a different container. Detail already lost to JPEG compression is not restored.

BMP usually stores pixels with little or no compression. A photo can grow many times larger than the JPEG source.

Not much. BMP is not a lossy format in the usual sense. Resize the image if you need a smaller file.

Yes. Add multiple files and process them with the same settings.

Do not rely on it. Many BMP variants and readers ignore alpha. Test on the destination system if transparency matters.

No. It is much larger than JPEG, PNG or WebP and offers no web advantage.

No. Download each converted file separately.

Yes, for processing. Avoid public converters for private documents.
