What TANCET is

TANCET is the Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test, the state entrance examination used for admission to the degree and diploma programmes run by Anna University and the affiliated colleges, and it is the test behind the counselling process that fills first year engineering and other professional places in the state.

Unlike the engineering admissions route, TANCET has its own file sizes and they are tighter. The photograph is offered as 200 by 300 pixels, as 200 by 230 pixels marked recommended, and in the physical 3.5 by 4.5 centimetre frame, while the signature is a 200 by 70 pixel strip capped at 15 KB. A 15 KB signature ceiling with a 10 KB floor is a narrow window, and a signature scanned with generous white space around the writing will overshoot it every time.

The TANCET notice itself is on www.tneaonline.org. Check the upload section of that document before generating files, since these requirements are revised between intakes and the values stored in this tool follow the recorded specification.

This page sets out the numbers TANCET actually asks for. It is not a general guide to cropping or to the tool interface, because those instructions do not change from one exam to the next and they are written up separately.

What the TANCET form asks you to upload

The application expects a pair of files, and each is checked on its own. They are:

  • A photograph at 200 x 300 px, no heavier than 50 KB and no lighter than 30 KB.
  • A signature at 200 x 70 px, no heavier than 15 KB and no lighter than 10 KB.

The TANCET numbers, and why they matter

TANCET publishes its sizes in both units, which means the record is offering two ways to express the same kind of requirement. Pick the row that matches how your own advertisement is worded: centimetres when the notification states a physical frame, pixels when it states a resolution. They are alternatives published for different notifications, not a sequence to apply in turn.

Resolution appears more than once in the TANCET record, at 200 and 96 DPI. That is not a contradiction: the physical frame is the same in both, and the choice is how densely the image is stored. Where an advertisement is silent, the 200 DPI row is the safer one, because a denser image still measures correctly at a lower resolution while the reverse is not true.

TANCET sets a floor as well as a ceiling. The photograph has to land between 30 KB and 50 KB, and the signature between 10 KB and 15 KB. A file far below the minimum can fail the portal check even though it is technically under the limit, which is why the tool exposes a minimum field next to the maximum.

The TANCET record offers 4 photograph options and 4 signature options: 200 x 300 px; 3.5 x 4.5 cm; 200 x 230 px. These come from different notifications and different recruitment streams rather than from one form, so there is no single right answer to which to use. Take the size from the advertisement you are actually applying under, and if it names a size that is not listed here, enter it by hand in the width and height fields.

If the TANCET application refuses your file

  • When TANCET refuses a file, weight is the first thing to check, because 50 KB leaves limited room. Look at the final size on the result card. If it sits above the limit, the source was cropped too loosely: tighten the frame and compress again.
  • Check the signature separately from the photograph. A 200 x 70 px box with a wide margin around the writing will breach the 15 KB ceiling on its own, which is a different fix from anything that applies to the portrait.
  • Repeating an identical submission is the most common wasted step here. Compare the values above against the live notification, and if the notification has moved, change one value at a time rather than re-running the whole form.

Frequently Asked Questions

The mechanics of the crop step, the face mask overlay, and the compression trade-off are identical across all of these tools, so they have their own guide instead of a section on every page. See the complete photo and signature guide.

FAQ

Short answers for the questions users ask before trusting the result.

200 x 300 px at 96 DPI, in JPEG, with the file kept at or under 50 KB and not under 30 KB. That row in the table is the preset the tool applies when TANCET is selected.

200 x 70 px at 96 DPI, in JPEG, capped at 15 KB with 10 KB as the floor. Crop close to the ink so the empty paper around it does not push the file past the ceiling.

50 KB at most, and not below 30 KB. After processing you can see the produced file weight beside the stated limit on the comparison card, so there is no need to download and inspect it to find out where you landed.

Download as JPEG and upload that file untouched. Opening it in another editor first is the quiet way to end up with a weight that no longer matches the requirement.

The preset labels 200 x 230 px at 200 DPI as recommended, JPEG at 10-50 KB. Other stored rows use 200 x 300 px or 3.5 x 4.5 cm.

The stored signature rows allow 1-11 KB. A clean scan with little background compresses better, so crop tightly and avoid a large colour area.
