HEIF To JPEG Converter

Re-save HEIF images as JPEG for print services, photo frames, office documents and software without HEIF support. Load one .heif or .heic file up to 100 MB, choose a quality from 10 to 100, compare previews and download a .jpeg file. The heic2any library decodes the file in your browser, so your photo stays on your device.

From HEIF Container to Everyday JPEG

JPEG has been the photo format of the web, of digital cameras and of print shops since the 1990s. HEIF arrived much later with better compression and more features, but software support has never caught up everywhere. The HEIF to JPEG Converter bridges the two: it opens a HEIF image, decodes it, and re-saves it as a JPEG with the .jpeg extension, ready for photo labs, older editing software, office tools and websites that predate HEIF.

The converter on this page always produces JPEG. Its format buttons for other types are switched off, and a notice beneath them confirms that JPEG is the fixed output.

HEIF and JPEG Compared

Understanding what changes during conversion helps you choose sensible settings.

AspectHEIFJPEG
CompressionModern codec (HEVC on Apple devices), smaller filesOlder DCT-based codec, larger files at similar quality
Bit depthCan store more than 8 bits per channel8 bits per channel
Multiple images in one fileSupported (bursts, sequences, depth maps)One image per file
TransparencyPossibleNot supported
CompatibilityPatchy outside recent Apple, Android and Windows setupsNear universal

Converting therefore keeps the main picture but drops the extras: only the first image, 8-bit colour, no transparency, and no metadata.

Where JPEG Is Still Required

  • Photo printing. Many online print services and in-store kiosks list JPEG as the only accepted format.
  • Older desktop software. Earlier versions of photo editors, layout programs and Windows image viewers lack HEIF support.
  • Digital photo frames and smart TVs. These often read JPEG from a USB stick but not HEIF.
  • Office documents. Inserting a JPEG into a slide deck or report is reliable on every machine that later opens it.
  • Marketplaces and listings. Classified ads and product listing tools commonly want JPEG.

How to Use the HEIF to JPEG Converter

  1. Drop your file on the box marked "Drop HEIC/HEIF photo here", or use Browse File. Names ending in .heif or .heic are accepted, up to 100 MB.
  2. The image is decoded on your device. You will see the file name, Original Size and Dimensions, plus the Original preview.
  3. Adjust the Quality slider (10 to 100, default 90). The Converted preview, Converted Size and Size Change refresh each time you move it.
  4. Click Download to save your-file-name.jpeg.
  5. Use Convert Another to clear the panel for the next image.

Picking Quality for Print Versus Screen

For prints, detail matters more than file size, so stay high, around 90 to 100. Print labs work from the pixels you give them; compression artefacts that are invisible on a phone can show up on a large print. For screens, such as a website, a slide or a message, 75 to 85 usually looks identical to the original at normal viewing size while saving a lot of space. Use the Size Change percentage as your guide: it tells you how much heavier or lighter the JPEG is than the HEIF you started with.

Preparing a Small Print Order

Suppose you have six HEIF photos from a family event and the local print shop's upload page only takes JPEG. A sensible routine looks like this:

  1. Convert the first photo at Quality 95 and look closely at faces and fine detail in the Converted preview.
  2. If it looks right, download it, click Convert Another, and repeat the same setting for the remaining five. Each run handles one file, so this takes a few minutes rather than seconds, but nothing leaves your device.
  3. Check the Dimensions line for each image. As a rough rule, more pixels allow a larger print before softness becomes noticeable; your print service will usually warn you if an image is too small for the chosen size.
  4. Upload the .jpeg files to the print service and keep the HEIF originals in your library.

The same routine works for slide shows on a TV, a digital photo frame, or a USB stick handed to a relative whose computer cannot open HEIF.

On Windows, Android and Linux

Because the converter is a web page, it works the same way on any operating system with a current browser. That is handy on Windows machines that lack the optional HEIF and HEVC extensions, on Linux desktops without a HEIF-capable viewer, and on Android phones whose gallery app saved in HEIF but whose messaging app expects JPEG.

What Happens Behind the Scenes

The page loads heic2any, a JavaScript library that decodes HEIF data in the browser. The decoded image is drawn onto a canvas the same size as the original, and the browser's native encoder exports it as image/jpeg with your chosen quality. Because none of these steps involve sending the file to a server, the image stays on your computer or phone throughout. The flip side is that conversion speed depends on your hardware.

Tips

  • Convert a single test image first to find a quality setting you like, then reuse it for the rest.
  • For a print order, check the Dimensions line. A small pixel count will print soft at large sizes regardless of format.
  • When the JPEG must be lighter than the original HEIF, expect to drop quality below 80, since HEIF starts with an efficiency advantage.
  • Store the HEIF original alongside the JPEG if you may want to edit the picture again later.

Avoid These

  • Renaming files instead of converting them; the data stays HEIF and programs will still fail to open it.
  • Using JPEG for images with transparent backgrounds. Transparent pixels become black in the output.
  • Assuming the date and GPS location travel with the file. They are not copied.
  • Selecting a folder of images. Only the first file is taken.

Known Limitations

  • Single image per run; no batch processing or ZIP download.
  • Files over 100 MB are refused.
  • Files are accepted by extension; other HEIF-family extensions are rejected.
  • Burst and sequence files return only the first image.
  • The Copy button may not work for JPEG in browsers that restrict clipboard images to PNG; Download is the reliable route.
  • A damaged file stops with a decode error; try exporting the image again from its source.

If a form needs the three-letter .jpg extension, the HEIF to JPG Converter produces the same image under that name. Apple users may also prefer the HEIC to JPEG Converter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Câu hỏi thường gặp

Các câu trả lời ngắn gọn cho những thắc mắc mà người dùng thường đặt ra trước khi tin tưởng vào kết quả.

Yes, if you keep the Quality slider high, around 90 to 100, and the photo has enough pixels for the print size. The converter keeps the original dimensions.

Extra images in the container, colour depth above 8 bits, transparency and EXIF metadata. The main picture itself is preserved, with some JPEG compression depending on the quality you choose.

The file is saved as .jpeg, keeping the original base name.

No. The converter runs in a normal web browser using the heic2any library loaded by the page.

No. The conversion is done in your browser and the file is not uploaded for processing.

Decoding HEIF is demanding and happens on your own device. Large files and older phones take longer; a desktop browser is usually faster.
