JPG to WEBP Image Converter, Compressor and Resizer

This converter turns JPG and JPEG images into WebP, a format designed for smaller web images at a comparable visual quality. The server handles the encoding, and the queue lets you convert several files with the same settings.

WebP is widely supported by modern browsers but not by every desktop program, print shop or upload portal. The output is a still image, not an animation. A JPG has no transparency, so the WebP will not gain an alpha channel.

Use the quality slider to balance size and appearance. A value around 75 is a sensible starting point for photographs; lower values can save more data but may introduce visible softness around edges and text.

What the converter does

The tool decodes the JPG, optionally resizes it, and encodes the result as WebP. The original is not modified. The new file appears in the output panel with its size, dimensions, DPI value when supplied, and a download link.

Everything is processed on the server. The browser shows a local preview for confirmation, then uploads the file to the conversion endpoint. The response is a data URL, so the finished image can be downloaded immediately without a second storage step.

Because the source is a JPG, the output is a single still frame. There is no animation to preserve. If you need an animated WebP, you must start from an animated source and use a tool that supports frame sequences.

Why WebP is useful

WebP can often produce a smaller file than JPG at the same visual quality, which helps page speed and bandwidth. It also supports transparency and animation in the format itself, although this particular JPG workflow does not create either feature.

For a content site, converting large photographic JPGs to WebP can reduce the bytes sent to visitors. For an app or a marketplace, check the upload rules first. Some older systems accept only JPG or PNG and will reject a .webp file even if it looks correct in a browser.

WebP is not a universal archive format. Keep the original JPG if you may need to re-edit or submit the image to a service that does not support WebP. The converter does not keep a copy for you.

Quality settings and file size

The quality range runs from 10 to 100 and defaults to 75. For WebP, the server uses that value as a lossy compression setting. Higher values retain more detail and create larger files; lower values reduce size and may produce blockiness, banding or soft edges.

A smaller file is not automatically a better file. Text, thin lines, gradients and faces are the first places where aggressive compression becomes visible. Compare the output at the size it will actually be displayed, not zoomed in at 400 percent.

The percentage badge compares the new size with the original. It can show an increase. A JPG that was already saved at a low quality may not shrink further when converted, and a resize can increase the pixel count if you enlarge it.

Transparency, colour and metadata

JPG does not support transparency, so the WebP output will be opaque. If you need a transparent WebP, start from a PNG or another image with an alpha channel and use a conversion path that preserves it.

Colour profiles and camera metadata are not a reliable part of this workflow. If colour accuracy is critical, check the output in a colour-managed application and keep the original file. A browser preview is not a proof that a printer will reproduce the same colours.

The DPI field is metadata for print-oriented workflows. It does not change the pixel dimensions and does not make the WebP more suitable for print. WebP is primarily a screen format; a print shop may still ask for TIFF, PNG or JPG.

Resize before you encode

The resize controls accept pixels, percent, inches, centimetres and millimetres. For web use, pixels are the most direct choice. Set the width and height to the largest size the image will be displayed at, then let compression handle the rest.

Downscaling before encoding usually produces a smaller and cleaner WebP than encoding a huge image and relying on the browser to shrink it. It also reduces processing time. Avoid enlarging a small JPG; extra pixels do not add real detail.

DPI is separate from pixel size. If a form asks for a specific DPI, enter it, but do not expect the pixel dimensions to change automatically. Check both values in the output badges.

Batch and URL workflow

Add several JPGs at once to create a queue. Each card can be processed individually, or you can send all pending files with Process All. The same format, quality, resize and DPI settings apply to the whole batch.

The From URL option accepts remote image addresses, one per line. It is convenient for images already published on a site, but it depends on the remote host. A blocked hotlink, a login wall or a slow server can cause a failure even when the image opens in your browser.

Each file is limited to 10 MB. Large batches may take longer and can hit server time or memory limits. Split long lists into smaller groups and inspect the first output before committing to the rest.

How to convert JPG to WebP

Leave Convert Format on WEBP. Set the quality slider, then add an optional resize or DPI value. If you are preparing a web image, start with a pixel width that matches the layout and a quality around 75.

Add the JPG by dragging it into the upload area, browsing for it, or pasting a URL. Check the queue card, then press Process. For multiple files, add them all and use Process All.

When the result appears, compare the size and inspect the preview. Download the WebP and test it in the destination browser or application. If the file is rejected, convert to JPG or PNG instead.

Limitations to keep in mind

The browse dialog on this page is configured to suggest WebP files, which can hide JPG files in some browsers. If that happens, drag the JPG onto the upload area or use the URL input. The server accepts JPG, JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP, JIFF and BMP sources.

The converter does not crop, rotate, remove backgrounds or create transparency. It does not check whether a marketplace, email client or content management system accepts WebP. Compatibility is your responsibility.

WebP support depends on the server's image library. If the encoder is unavailable, the conversion can fail even though JPG to PNG works. In that case, keep the JPG or use another format rather than repeatedly retrying the same file.

Frequently Asked Questions

Câu hỏi thường gặp

Các câu trả lời ngắn gọn cho những thắc mắc mà người dùng thường đặt ra trước khi tin tưởng vào kết quả.

Often, but not always. WebP usually saves space at a similar visual quality, but an already optimized JPG may not shrink much, and a high quality setting can produce a larger file.

It can. WebP uses lossy compression at the default setting. Lower quality values increase the chance of soft edges, banding and blocky areas, especially in text and gradients.

No. A JPG has no transparency, so the output is opaque. Start from a PNG or another alpha-capable source if you need a transparent WebP.

Yes. Add multiple files to the queue and use Process All with one set of settings. Process separate batches when the files need different sizes or quality levels.

The picker is set to suggest WebP files. Drag the JPG onto the upload area or use the From URL option. The server still accepts JPG input.

Not always. Some email clients, older design tools and print workflows do not accept WebP. Keep a JPG or PNG copy for those destinations.

Yes. Choose a resize unit, enter the dimensions, set the quality, and process. Resizing before encoding usually gives a smaller, cleaner result than encoding at full size.
