What this page does

This page converts WebP images to GIF. The output opens on GIF, and the page supports multiple files, a quality setting and optional resizing. The server writes a GIF for each upload and returns a download.

It is a compatibility converter for a legacy format. WebP is modern and efficient; GIF is old, limited and accepted by some systems that still cannot read WebP. Use the conversion when a destination specifically demands GIF, not because GIF is a better image format.

Why convert WebP to GIF

Some older chat clients, email templates, embedded menus, forums and industrial tools accept GIF but not WebP. In those cases, converting is the only way to deliver the image without changing the destination.

GIF is also simple to decode, which is why it persists in small devices and old software. The trade-off is colour and transparency quality. A modern WebP can look much better than the GIF that replaces it.

The 256-colour limit

GIF stores at most 256 colours per frame. A WebP photo can contain millions, so the converter must reduce the palette. Smooth gradients, skin tones and detailed textures may band or dither.

Flat graphics, icons and simple diagrams survive far better. If the source is a photo, expect a visible quality drop; if the destination accepts PNG or JPEG, use that instead.

The quality slider may influence palette construction, but it cannot create colours GIF does not support. Lowering it will not make a photo look accurate.

Animation is not preserved

Do not use this page to turn an animated WebP into an animated GIF. The workflow is a still-image converter, and the output should be treated as one frame. Frame timing and sequence are not part of the result.

If you need an animated GIF, use a dedicated animation tool that can import the WebP frames and set delays. This page is for a single still.

Transparency becomes binary

GIF transparency is a hard switch: a pixel is fully transparent or fully opaque. WebP can store partial alpha, so soft shadows and anti-aliased edges may turn into a hard fringe after conversion.

Check the GIF on the background where it will be used. A transparent graphic that looks fine on white can show a dark or light halo on a coloured page. Placing the subject on the final background colour before conversion is often safer.

File size

A GIF is not automatically smaller than a WebP. A flat graphic may compress well; a photo with a reduced palette can still be large and look worse. Compare the actual files before choosing GIF for size reasons.

Resizing before conversion reduces the pixel count and usually produces a cleaner result. A huge GIF displayed small wastes bandwidth and may show more dithering than necessary.

Batch workflow

Add the files, keep GIF selected, set any resize options and process. Each file is handled separately, and there is no ZIP bundle.

Test one flat graphic and one photo before converting a mixed batch. The flat graphic may look fine; the photo may band badly. Split the batch by content type if the results differ.

Limits and privacy

Files are uploaded to the server for conversion. Do not send private images or identity documents to a public converter. The page does not offer a local-only mode.

Large images and long batches can hit upload or memory limits. Keep the WebP originals until the GIFs have been checked on the destination system.

GIF in embedded and legacy systems

Small devices and older interfaces often have a GIF decoder but no WebP support. In that environment, the format is a hard requirement. Keep the image simple, use the exact display size and test on the device rather than only on a desktop.

A device may also have a fixed palette or a memory limit. A GIF that opens on a computer can still fail on the device if the dimensions or colour table are too large.

Reducing dithering

Dithering tries to fake smooth colour with a pattern of pixels. On a small display it can look like noise or texture. Flatten gradients, reduce the number of colours in the source and avoid soft shadows before converting.

A flat logo with a few solid colours usually looks cleaner than a photo with a sky gradient. If the image must be a photo, accept the banding or choose a destination that supports more colours.

File size and testing

A GIF can be larger than the WebP it came from, even after the palette reduction. Check the bytes and the visual result together; a smaller file that is unreadable is not an improvement.

Test the GIF in the actual chat client, forum or device. A desktop viewer may hide a transparency or palette problem that the destination shows immediately.

GIF versus PNG for legacy delivery

If the destination accepts PNG, use PNG instead of GIF. PNG supports more colours and smooth alpha, and it avoids the palette reduction. GIF is only necessary when the reader cannot decode PNG or when a specific system requires the extension.

For a simple icon, either format may work. For a photo or a gradient, PNG is visibly better. Choose GIF for compatibility, not for quality.

Preparing a WebP source

Start from the largest, cleanest WebP you have. If it already has a transparent background, decide what colour should replace it before converting to GIF. If it is a photo, simplify the composition and avoid fine gradients that will dither.

Resize to the final display size first. A smaller source gives the palette fewer pixels to describe and usually produces a cleaner GIF.

Testing on the target device

Open the GIF on the actual device or in the actual chat client. Check the palette, the transparent areas and the dimensions. A desktop viewer can hide a colour or alpha problem that the destination shows immediately.

Keep one known-good test file and compare new conversions against it. If the new file fails, the test file tells you whether the device or the image is the problem.

If the device rejects the GIF, check the dimensions, the colour depth and the file size before trying another conversion. A file that is correct but too large for the device will fail just as surely as one with the wrong palette. Record the settings that worked.

No. The output is a still image. Use a dedicated animation tool for frames and timing.

GIF allows only 256 colours. A photo must be reduced, which causes banding or dithering.

Transparent areas can survive, but GIF has no soft alpha. Smooth edges may become hard.

Sometimes for simple flat graphics, often larger for photos. Compare the actual files.

Logos, icons, charts and simple graphics with few colours and large flat areas.

Yes. Add multiple files and process the batch.
