HEIC, HEIF To JPG, JPEG, PNG, GIF Converter
HEIC / HEIF Converter turns Apple-style photos into formats that more apps can open. Upload a .heic or .heif file, choose JPG, JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP or AVIF, set the quality, and download the converted image.
The conversion runs in your browser with the heic2any library. The file is decoded to a PNG canvas and then encoded in the selected output format. That means the photo is not uploaded to a server.
HEIC is efficient on Apple devices but poorly supported by many websites, older editors and Windows applications. Converting to JPG or PNG is the usual fix when a portal refuses the original file.

What the converter does
The page accepts a single .heic or .heif file by drag-and-drop or browse. After the file is selected, it shows a preview, the original size and a format selector. The default output is JPG. A quality slider appears for lossy formats and ranges from 10 to 100, with 90 as the default.
When you click Convert, the browser loads the HEIC decoder, reads the image, draws it to a canvas and exports a new file. The download uses the original base name with the new extension, such as IMG_1234.jpg. A before-and-after size comparison helps you see the trade-off.
The tool is a format converter, not a photo editor. It does not crop, rotate, adjust colour or remove metadata by design. Any orientation baked into the HEIC may be applied during decoding, so check the result if the original looked sideways.
Choosing an output format
- JPG or JPEG: the safest choice for websites, forms and email. Small files and broad support, with lossy compression.
- PNG: lossless and supports transparency, but much larger for a photograph.
- WebP: good compression and modern browser support. Some older apps and portals do not accept it.
- AVIF: efficient modern compression, but support is uneven outside current browsers.
- GIF: limited to 256 colours and a poor choice for photographs. The browser may not provide a GIF encoder, so this option can fail or produce an unexpected result.
If you are sending the photo to a person, JPG is the least surprising choice. If you are archiving an image with transparency or text, PNG is safer. Use WebP or AVIF only when the destination explicitly supports them.
How to convert a HEIC photo
- Drag the .heic or .heif file onto the drop area, or click to browse.
- Wait for the preview and the original size to appear.
- Pick JPG for compatibility, or another format if you have a reason.
- Adjust the quality slider. Start at 90 and lower it only if the file is too large.
- Click Convert and wait for the browser to decode the image.
- Check the preview and the new size.
- Download the file and open it in the app where you need it.
A very large HEIC photo can take a few seconds and a noticeable amount of memory. Keep the tab open until the conversion finishes. If the page becomes unresponsive, close other tabs and try a smaller image.
Quality and file size
For JPG, JPEG, WebP and AVIF, the quality slider controls how much compression is applied. A higher value keeps more detail and creates a larger file. A lower value shrinks the file but can introduce blocky areas around edges and smooth gradients.
PNG is lossless, so the quality slider does not apply. The file can be much larger than the original HEIC. That is normal: HEIC uses efficient modern compression, while PNG is designed for lossless storage, not small photographic files.
Converting from HEIC to JPG does not restore detail that was never captured. It also does not make a low-resolution photo suitable for print. The output has the same pixel dimensions as the decoded source unless the browser scales it during drawing.
Browser support and limits
The UI says the maximum file size is 100 MB, but the real limit is the browser's memory and the decoder. A 100 MB file may fail on a phone even if the label allows it. Start with one photo at a time; the page does not batch convert.
WebP and AVIF encoding depend on the browser's canvas support. If the browser cannot encode the selected format, the option may be disabled or the conversion may fail. JPG and PNG are the most reliable outputs.
GIF is especially limited. Canvas does not provide a standard GIF encoder in every browser, so the GIF option may silently produce PNG bytes with a .gif name. If you need a real GIF, use a dedicated converter and verify the file type.
The decoder may not support every HEIC variant, especially images with unusual colour profiles or multi-image containers. A burst photo, a live photo or an HDR sequence may convert only the primary image.
Privacy and safe use
The HEIC file is read locally. The page does not upload it to Newisty and does not keep a history. The conversion library is loaded from a CDN, so the page needs network access the first time; the image itself stays in the browser.
A converted photo may still contain metadata from the original, depending on what the canvas export preserves. Do not assume the output is stripped of location or camera data. Use a dedicated metadata tool if you need to remove it.
On a shared device, delete the downloaded file and clear the browser's download list when you are done. A photo can contain personal information in the image itself, not only in its metadata.
Common problems
- Nothing happens after upload: the decoder may still be loading, or the file may not be a supported HEIC variant.
- The preview is rotated: the original orientation metadata may be applied differently by the decoder. Rotate the output in an editor if needed.
- The JPG is larger than the HEIC: that is common. HEIC is more efficient; JPG compatibility costs space.
- GIF looks wrong: the browser may not have a real GIF encoder. Use JPG or PNG instead.
- Transparency turns black or white: lossy formats flatten transparency. Use PNG if you need an alpha channel.
- The file opens nowhere: check the extension and the actual file type, especially after a GIF conversion.
What HEIC and HEIF are
HEIC is Apple's container for HEIF images, based on the High Efficiency Image Format. It uses modern compression to store a good-looking photo in fewer bytes than JPEG. iPhones often save photos as HEIC by default, which is why a file that looks fine on the phone can fail to open on a Windows PC or an older website.
A HEIC file can hold more than one image. A Live Photo, a burst or an HDR capture may contain several frames, depth information or auxiliary images. This converter reads the primary image and exports a still picture. It does not preserve the Live Photo motion or the depth map.
HEIF is the broader standard; HEIC is the Apple variant most people encounter. The page accepts both .heic and .heif extensions and uses the same decoder path.
Sharing and editing workflow
If you need to send a photo to someone who uses Windows or an older Android phone, convert it to JPG first. If you plan to edit it, convert to PNG for a lossless intermediate, then save the final edit as JPG. That avoids stacking JPEG compression on top of an already compressed source.
For a website, JPG at a reasonable quality is usually enough. Resize the image to the display size before uploading; a 12-megapixel photo is unnecessary for a 1200-pixel-wide hero image. The converter does not resize, so use a separate resizer if the file is too large for the page.
Keep the original HEIC as your archive if you may need the extra dynamic range later. The converted JPG is a compatibility copy, not a replacement for the original.
Checking the converted file
Open the download in the app where you need it, not only in the browser. Some browsers display a preview from memory even if the saved file has an unexpected type. On Windows, check the file properties and the extension. On a phone, check that the gallery can import it.
If the colours look different, the source may use a wide-gamut profile that the converter does not carry over. Convert to PNG for a more faithful intermediate, or use a colour-managed editor for critical work.
If the image is rotated, correct it in an editor and re-save. Do not repeatedly convert the same file to fix orientation; each pass can add another generation of compression.
