DTCC launches tokenization service for $30 trillion of U.S. stocks, ETFs and Treasuries with 20 Wall Street firms on board

DTCC puts Wall Street's main securities onto blockchain networks

The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC), the central firm that handles clearing, settlement and custody for much of U.S. stock and bond trading, went live Wednesday with a tokenization service. The move brings select U.S. stocks, exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and Treasury securities onto blockchain infrastructure.

The tokens can move between registered wallets around the clock. Each token is backed one-for-one by the actual securities held at DTCC subsidiary Depository Trust Company (DTC). DTCC sits at the heart of the U.S. system, holding more than $114 trillion in securities through its subsidiaries.

Key numbers

  • 34 securities are eligible at launch, worth approximately $30 trillion in market value.

  • 20 firms have signed agreements to access the service.

  • Initial list includes select large-cap stocks from the Russell 1000 index, ETFs and U.S. Treasury bills, notes and bonds.

Where the service runs and who is joining

The service launched on the Canton Network and on DTCC's private Besu blockchain. JPMorgan, Citi, Morgan Stanley, Bank of America and UBS are among the 20 Wall Street firms with signed agreements, a DTCC spokesperson told CoinDesk.

DTCC plans to add support for the Stellar blockchain and Circle Internet's Arc stablecoin network next year. The company also points to broader corporate-action support and tools for settling transactions with digital cash.

Why connecting these assets matters

Tokenization aims to make financial assets easier to transfer, settle and use as collateral. By tying tokenized securities to the systems that already underpin trillions of dollars in transactions, the technology could move from being a separate market to part of mainstream market infrastructure.

The launch keeps existing shareholder protections, according to the report. Analysts at Citi have projected the tokenized securities market could reach $5.5 trillion by 2030 as adoption grows.

What remains unconfirmed

The source does not say when transactions using the new service will begin in earnest, whether the tokens will trade on a secondary market, or which of the Russell 1000 stocks are included in the initial 34-asset list. Plans to add Stellar and Arc are future steps, not current capabilities.
