Ondo Opens Secondary Trading for OpenAI-Linked Private Market Note
Ondo launches secondhand market for OpenAI tokenized note
Ondo Finance opened secondary trading on October 8 for a token called OPAIPon, giving eligible non-U.S. investors a way to buy and sell exposure to OpenAI before the company goes public.
The token trades against USDC (a stablecoin, a type of crypto token pegged to the U.S. dollar) on the Ondo Perps spot market. An Ondo announcement posted at 9:36 a.m. ET confirmed the market was live, and 24/7 trading is available.
At 4:32 p.m. ET, the displayed price was $1,132 with a bid-ask spread of $5.60, or 0.49%. The venue did not show a 24-hour volume figure. That spread is separate from trading fees, which are 0.25% for makers and 0.50% for takers.
What the note actually gives you
OPAIPon is a fully funded spot asset with no borrowing, leverage, or perpetual funding payments. Buyers must meet both the venue's access rules and the note's eligibility requirements. U.S. persons are excluded, and other jurisdictional restrictions apply.
Buyers hold an unsecured debt obligation of PM Issuer Co (BVI) Limited, not OpenAI shares. The notes are not collateralized by underlying shares and confer no ownership or shareholder rights in the referenced company.
Each note references one common share. Redemption follows a qualifying liquidity event, with the payout tied to that event's per-share value, less tax withholding and settlement fees. After an IPO, the price is set six months later. Other triggers include a majority acquisition or expiration of the ten-year term.
Price does not equal redemption value
The $1,132 displayed price is a secondary-market quote, not a fixed redemption amount. Ondo's FAQ says buyers and sellers set the trading price, which can differ significantly from both the company's latest private valuation and the eventual payout. The venue warns that liquidity may be limited and orders may fill only partly or not at all.
Redemption also requires action by holders. They must accept the Token Terms, prove wallet control, complete know-your-customer checks, and claim within one year of the liquidity event.

Why this matters for tokenized finance
The launch follows Ondo's prelaunch outline, which described an unnamed pre-IPO AI company and said secondary trading was expected this week. The live market now identifies that company as OpenAI. It is the first private-market note with a named company attached.
What is still unclear
Trading volume on launch day was not publicly shown. The long-term liquidity of the market and how closely secondary prices will track OpenAI's private valuation or eventual IPO price remain unconfirmed.
What is confirmed: Secondary trading for OPAIPon launched on October 8 on the Ondo Perps spot market. The note references one OpenAI common share. U.S. persons are excluded. Redemption is tied to a liquidity event and requires holder action.
