Xapo CEO: Wealthy Bitcoin holders shift from trading to private banking services
Shift from speculation to wealth management
Seamus Rocca, CEO of Xapo Bank, reported that wealthy bitcoin holders are increasingly using their cryptocurrency for borrowing and generating income rather than just trading it for profit. This change marks a move toward private banking services for digital assets.
At the Gibraltar-based bank, customers want to access cash without selling their bitcoin. They are also placing some holdings into investments that earn income or accumulating more coins through interest on dollar savings, according to Rocca.
Two distinct groups of investors
- About 45% of Xapo customers use a service that pays interest on dollar savings in bitcoin.
- Some early adopters are taking profits due to past market downturns.
- Other long-term holders prefer to borrow against their coins to stay invested.
What Rocca told CoinDesk
Rocca stated that the behavior reflects the growing maturity of bitcoin. He noted that five or six years ago, the currency was primarily seen as a speculative trading tool. Today, more investors are looking for financial services built around their existing wealth. The bank charges an annual membership fee of $1,000, which includes dollar banking and access to custody, investments, and borrowing.
Key numbers and features
- Xapo offers a variable base rate of 4.1% on dollar savings, paid in bitcoin.
- A temporary introductory rate of 4.6% is available for eligible new members.
- The bank also has a separate lending fund targeting annual returns of up to 4%.
Why this matters
Traditional banks are often cautious about digital assets. This leaves an opening for specialist providers like Xapo to offer tailored financial products. The shift suggests that for some investors, bitcoin is becoming a standard part of long-term wealth management.
