What the Gujarat Public Service Commission is
The Gujarat Public Service Commission is a constitutional body set up to conduct examinations for appointment to the services of the state. Its main workload is the Class 1 and Class 2 service examinations, split into preliminary, main and interview stages, alongside direct recruitment to specialist and department posts such as the Class 1 Geologist recruitment for Industries and Mines.
The Gujarat specification is worth reading carefully because it is not the usual 3.5 by 4.5 centimetre frame. The stored photo size is 3.6 by 5 centimetres, or 130 by 180 pixels, and the signature box is noticeably wider than most boards ask for at 7.0 by 2.5 centimetres, or 275 by 90 pixels. A signature cropped to the common 3.5 by 1.5 centimetre habit will be the wrong width for GPSC, so take the figure from the notification rather than from another Gujarat application.
The official GPSC site is gpsc.gujarat.gov.in. Take the photograph and signature numbers from the notification published there rather than from a third-party summary, since that document is the one the portal was built against.
This page sets out the numbers GPSC actually asks for. It is not a general guide to cropping or to the tool interface, because those instructions do not change from one exam to the next and they are written up separately.
What the GPSC form asks you to upload
Two files go into this form. They are:
- A photograph at 3.6 x 5 cm, no heavier than 500 KB and no lighter than 50 KB.
- A signature at 7 x 2.5 cm, no heavier than 500 KB and no lighter than 50 KB.
| Item | Size | Unit | Format | Max file size | Min | DPI |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Photo | 3.6 x 5 | cm | JPEG | 500 KB | 50 KB | 96 |
| Photo | 130 x 180 | px | JPEG | 500 KB | 50 KB | 96 |
| Signature | 7 x 2.5 | cm | JPEG | 500 KB | 50 KB | 96 |
| Signature | 275 x 90 | px | JPEG | 500 KB | 50 KB | 96 |
The GPSC numbers, and why they matter
GPSC publishes its sizes in both units, which means the record is offering you two ways to express the same kind of requirement. Pick the row that matches how your own advertisement is worded: centimetres when the notification states a physical frame, pixels when it states a resolution. They are alternatives published for different notifications, not a sequence to apply in turn.
Worth knowing that GPSC works in both directions. The photo must be no larger than 500 KB and no smaller than 50 KB, and the signature no larger than 500 KB with 50 KB as its floor. Overshooting the ceiling is the usual mistake; undershooting the floor is the one that surprises people who compress hard.
If the GPSC application refuses your file
- When GPSC refuses a file, weight is the first thing to check, because 500 KB leaves limited room. Look at the final size on the result card. If it sits above the limit, the source was cropped too loosely: tighten the frame and compress again.
- The signature is judged on its own 7 x 2.5 cm box and is not rescued by a correct photograph. If it is rejected, the usual cause is loose cropping: a signature scanned with a wide white margin carries more weight than the 500 KB allowance and fails even though the writing itself looks right.
- When two identical files are both refused, the file is usually not the variable. Re-check the notification against the table above, since a corrigendum between your two attempts is the usual explanation.
