HEIF To PNG Converter
Extract the main image from a HEIF file as a lossless PNG, ready for retouching, OCR, datasets or archiving. Select one .heif or .heic file up to 100 MB, review the original and converted previews, then download the PNG or copy it to your clipboard. Conversion runs locally in the browser and the file is never sent to a server.

HEIF to PNG Converter Overview
When a HEIF image needs to go into a workflow that will process it further, such as retouching, annotation, OCR, compositing or building a dataset, the safest intermediate format is PNG. PNG is lossless and universally readable, so each later step starts from the same pixels instead of from a lossy copy that degrades on every save. This tool converts one .heif or .heic image to a .png file directly in your browser.
PNG is the only output here. The other entries in the format grid are disabled, a notice confirms the fixed PNG output, and no quality slider is shown because there is no compression level to choose.

Where HEIF Files Come From
HEIF is an ISO standard container. Apple's iPhones and iPads write it as .heic. Several Android manufacturers offer a high-efficiency photo option that saves HEIF, and some cameras, scanners, screenshot tools and image libraries export .heif as well. The file may hold one image or several, plus thumbnails, depth maps or alpha layers. For most people the useful part is simply the main picture, and that is what this converter extracts.
What You Get
- A PNG with the same width and height as the decoded HEIF image.
- The original base name with a
.pngextension, for examplescan_014.heifbecomesscan_014.png. - A side-by-side Original and Converted preview to confirm the result.
- Output Format, Converted Size and Size Change readouts so you know how the file weight changed.
- Download, Copy and Convert Another buttons.
Instructions
- Choose your HEIF file with Browse File, or drag it onto "Drop HEIC/HEIF photo here". The limit is 100 MB per file.
- Wait for decoding. The details card shows the file name, Original Size and pixel Dimensions.
- Review the Converted preview next to the Original.
- Select Download to save the PNG, or Copy to paste it into another application.
- Select Convert Another to start again with a fresh file.
Processing Location and Privacy
All steps run locally. The heic2any library, loaded from a public CDN when the page opens, decodes the HEIF bytes inside the browser. The result is painted onto a canvas, and the canvas is exported to PNG by the browser engine. Your file is not posted to a server for conversion, which matters if you are handling scanned documents, medical images, client work or anything else you would rather keep on your own machine. The PNG is written from canvas pixels, so it does not include the original EXIF fields.
Workflows Where a PNG Intermediate Helps
Retouching and design
Open the PNG in your editor, make changes, save as often as you like, and export to a delivery format only at the end. You avoid the cumulative softening that repeated JPEG saves cause.
Text recognition and document capture
If you photographed a receipt, a page or a label in HEIF, a PNG gives OCR software crisp edges to work with, without added compression noise around the characters.
Machine learning and datasets
Training and labelling tools almost always read PNG. Converting HEIF captures to PNG avoids introducing an extra lossy step into the data.
Bug reports and documentation
Screenshots captured as HEIF on a phone can be converted and attached to tickets or wiki pages, where PNG renders consistently.
Archiving a working copy
Archivists and photo hobbyists sometimes keep a PNG alongside the HEIF original as an insurance copy in a format that every future program is very likely to read. The HEIF stays as the compact master; the PNG is the format-neutral backup.
Checking the Result Before You Save
The two preview panes make a quick quality check easy. Look for three things before pressing Download:
- Orientation. If the Converted image is sideways, rotate it in an editor after saving; the converter does not rotate images.
- Dimensions. The Dimensions value in the details card tells you the pixel size of the PNG you are about to download, since the output keeps that size.
- Colour. Wide-gamut or HDR captures are rendered in the standard colour range of a browser canvas, so very saturated scenes can look a little flatter than on the phone that took them.
Understanding File Size
Expect the PNG to be much bigger than the HEIF. HEIF achieves small files by discarding detail the eye is unlikely to miss; PNG keeps every decoded pixel. A high-resolution camera image can grow several times over, and the Size Change line will show that as a large increase. Images with large flat areas, like screenshots and scanned documents on white paper, grow far less than detailed outdoor photos.
Recommendations
- Use PNG when the image will be edited or analysed further; use JPEG when it is going straight to a person or a size-limited upload.
- Crop or resize in your editor after converting if you only need part of a large image.
- Copy is convenient for one-off pasting into documents or chat; Download is better for anything you want to keep.
- Keep the HEIF source. It is the compact original, and the PNG can always be recreated from it.
Mistakes to Steer Clear Of
- Expecting extra detail. PNG preserves what was decoded; it cannot recover detail HEIF compression already removed.
- Uploading a PNG of a full camera photo to a form with a small size cap.
- Selecting many files at once. Only the first file of the selection is converted.
- Changing the extension manually instead of converting, which leaves the data unreadable as PNG.
Limitations
- One file per run, 100 MB maximum, accepted only with a
.heifor.heicname. - Multi-image HEIF files return the first image only; depth maps and other auxiliary images are not exported.
- Colour depth is limited to the 8 bits per channel that a browser canvas handles, so 10-bit HEIF images are reduced.
- No built-in resize, crop or rotate.
- Corrupted or unusual files may stop with "Failed to decode HEIC/HEIF file. It may be corrupted."
