YouTube Thumbnail Grabber - Grab All sizes in 5 Format
YouTube Thumbnail Grabber extracts the video ID from a YouTube link and shows the thumbnail images that YouTube serves for that video. It covers the common sizes, from a 1280×720 maxres image down to the small default and frame previews.
Paste a watch link, a Shorts link, a youtu.be link or a bare video ID. The page builds the image URLs, previews each one, and lets you save the size you need. Missing images are hidden rather than shown as broken cards.
The tool runs entirely in your browser and does not download or re-host the video. Thumbnail availability and copyright still belong to the video owner and YouTube.

What the grabber finds
YouTube stores several thumbnail variants for each video. The grabber requests the common names: maxresdefault, sddefault, hqdefault, mqdefault, default, and the frame images. It displays each one with its dimensions and a save button.
The maxres image is usually 1280×720. sddefault is 640×480, hqdefault is 480×360, mqdefault is 320×180 and default is 120×90. The frame images are smaller previews captured at different points in the video. Not every video has every size; older uploads or videos without a custom thumbnail may only have the lower-resolution versions.
If a size is missing, the card is hidden. If maxres or sd resolves to YouTube's grey placeholder, the page hides it rather than offering a useless download. The preview falls back to hqdefault when maxres fails.
How to grab a thumbnail
- Copy a YouTube video link from the address bar or the share menu.
- Paste it into the input. The page may fetch automatically on paste, or you can click Get Thumbnails.
- Check the video ID badge to confirm the right video was parsed.
- Review the available sizes in the result cards.
- Click Save on a specific size, or use Download Best for the maxres image.
- If the browser blocks the download, the image may open in a new tab; save it from there.
The tool accepts youtube.com/watch links, Shorts, live, embed and /v/ links, youtu.be short links, youtube-nocookie embed links and a bare 11-character video ID. A playlist or channel link without a video ID is rejected.
Supported sizes and when to use them
- Maxres (1280×720): best for a presentation, a blog header or a large preview. Not every video has it.
- SD (640×480): a fallback when maxres is missing, with a 4:3 shape.
- HQ (480×360): a reliable small preview, often available even on older videos.
- MQ (320×180): useful for a list or a compact card.
- Default (120×90): a tiny thumbnail for a link preview.
- Frames: small stills from the video, useful for a storyboard or a quick visual reference.
Choose the largest size that actually exists rather than upscaling a small image. A 120×90 thumbnail enlarged to a hero image will look soft and pixelated.
Download behavior
The save buttons fetch the image as a blob and download it with a filename that includes the video ID and the size key. If the cross-origin request is blocked, the page opens the image URL in a new tab instead. That is a browser security behaviour, not a failure of the video.
Download Best always requests the maxres image. If maxres is unavailable, use one of the smaller cards instead. The page does not automatically substitute a lower size for the best download.
Thumbnails are served by YouTube's image CDN. The tool does not proxy or re-encode them, so the downloaded file is the image the CDN returns.
Good uses and copyright
Use the grabber to recover a thumbnail for your own video, to prepare a presentation about a public video, or to compare thumbnail designs for research. It is also handy for a link preview when you have permission to use the image.
A thumbnail is copyrighted by the video owner unless stated otherwise. Downloading it does not grant a licence to republish it. Do not use someone else's thumbnail as your own video art, in an advertisement, or in a way that implies endorsement. When in doubt, ask the owner or use a licensed image.
Do not use the tool to scrape a channel, build a bulk image library or misrepresent a video. It handles one video at a time and does not provide metadata, titles or channel details.
Limits and privacy
The page does not call a Newisty server. It parses the ID in JavaScript and points the browser at YouTube's public image URLs. The video URL and the downloaded image are handled by your browser and YouTube's CDN.
Private, deleted, age-restricted or region-blocked videos may not expose a thumbnail. A malformed URL or a missing ID produces an error notice. A live stream may have a thumbnail that changes after the stream ends.
The tool does not download the video, the audio, the captions or the channel avatar. It only handles the thumbnail image variants listed on the page. If you need a frame from the video itself, use a video editor or a screen capture with the necessary rights.
Thumbnail sizes and design checks
A YouTube thumbnail is usually designed at 1280×720 and must remain readable at a much smaller size in a search result or a mobile feed. The grabber shows the same image at several resolutions, which makes it a quick way to check whether the text survives when the card shrinks. If the title is unreadable at 320×180, it will be unreadable in a crowded feed.
Check the safe area as well as the resolution. YouTube overlays a duration badge and other interface elements on the thumbnail, so important text should not sit in the bottom-right corner. A face or a product should have breathing room around it. The grabber does not add overlays; use it to inspect the source image before you upload a new version.
For your own channel, keep a copy of the original design file. The downloaded maxres image is a flattened export, not an editable source. If you need to change the text later, edit the original and upload a new thumbnail.
Recovering your own thumbnail
If you lost the original file, the maxres image is the best copy YouTube exposes. Download it, check the resolution and colour, and use it as a reference for a new design. Do not try to upscale a 480×360 image to a hero banner; the result will be soft and the compression artefacts will be visible.
When you replace a thumbnail, YouTube may take time to refresh the cached image. The grabber requests the current CDN file, so an old image can persist briefly. Try again later or check the video in a private window if you need to confirm the change.
For a collaborative project, keep the thumbnail source in the same folder as the video project and note the font, colours and image licences. That makes a future refresh much easier than reconstructing the design from a screenshot.
