GIF to BMP Image Converter
GIF to BMP Converter turns a GIF into a legacy bitmap for old Windows, device or embedded software. Expect a still image, a reduced palette and a much larger file.

What this page does
This page converts a GIF to BMP. The output format opens on BMP, and you can add several files, set a quality level and optionally resize. The server writes a bitmap for each upload and returns a download.
It is a compatibility conversion, not a quality upgrade. GIF is a small palette format; BMP is a simple bitmap container. Moving between them does not add detail, and the BMP is usually much larger.
What GIF and BMP each do well
GIF is compact for flat graphics and is still accepted by old chat clients, forums and embedded menus. It supports a limited palette, binary transparency and, in the right tool, animation. BMP is a legacy Windows bitmap that stores pixels with little or no compression and is easy for small programs to decode.
Neither is a modern web format. GIF survives because it is universally accepted; BMP survives because old software and devices still ask for it. If you can choose freely, PNG, JPEG or WebP will usually serve you better.
Why convert GIF to BMP
The usual reason is a destination that accepts only BMP: an old label program, an industrial controller, a Windows utility or an embedded display. The GIF may be the only copy of the image you have, so you convert it into the bitmap the device expects.
Another reason is to move a still graphic into a legacy editing workflow that cannot open GIF. Once in BMP, the pixels are simple to read, but the file becomes large and the palette stays reduced.
Do not convert to BMP for a website or email. The file will be heavier and offer no visual benefit.
Animation is lost
A GIF can contain several frames with delays. BMP is a still-image format, so the output is one frame. Do not expect motion, frame order or timing to survive. If the GIF is animated, the converter treats it as an image and writes a single bitmap.
If you need a specific moment, extract that frame in an animation tool first, then convert the still. This page does not show a timeline and does not let you pick a frame.
Transparency and palette
BMP support for transparency is inconsistent. Many BMP variants and readers ignore alpha, and some tools flatten it onto a solid colour. A transparent GIF therefore may not stay transparent after conversion. Test the result on the destination program rather than assuming.
GIF has at most 256 colours. BMP can store more, but it cannot restore colours the GIF already discarded. A photo converted from GIF to BMP will still look posterised or dithered; the bitmap only preserves the reduced palette faithfully.
File size
A BMP commonly stores three or four bytes per pixel with little compression. A 1000 by 1000 image can become three or four megabytes before headers, even if the GIF was a few hundred kilobytes. The quality slider will not shrink that dramatically.
Resize before conversion when the destination has a fixed screen or print size. A 4000-pixel bitmap sent to a device that displays 800 pixels wastes storage and may exceed a transfer limit.
Quality and resizing
The quality control is mainly for lossy formats. BMP is generally lossless or lightly compressed, so pixel dimensions dominate the result. Use the resize fields to set the exact width and height the device expects.
DPI is metadata, not detail. A 300-pixel image is still 300 pixels at any DPI. Set enough pixels for the output size, then set the DPI the destination asks for.
Batch workflow
Add the files, keep BMP selected, set any resize options and process. Each file is handled separately, and there is no ZIP bundle. Download the results one by one.
Test one file on the real destination before converting a folder. A BMP that opens in one reader may fail in another, and a batch of large bitmaps is slow to redo.
When not to use BMP
Do not use BMP for web pages, email, cloud galleries or long-term archives. Use PNG for lossless graphics, JPEG for photos and WebP for efficient delivery. BMP is a compatibility artifact, not a general-purpose image format.
Limits and privacy
Files are uploaded for server-side conversion. Do not send private documents or client images to a public converter. The page does not offer a local-only mode and does not keep a gallery of results.
Large images and long batches can hit upload or memory limits. Keep the GIF originals until the BMPs have been opened on the destination system.
BMP variants and device limits
BMP is a family of layouts rather than one fixed file. Bitmaps can use different bit depths, colour tables and compression modes. A reader that accepts one variant may reject another even though both end in .bmp. If the destination names a variant, follow it and test a small file first.
An embedded device may also impose a maximum dimension, a memory buffer or a fixed colour depth. A bitmap that opens on a desktop can still fail on the device if it is too large or uses an unsupported layout.
Preparing a GIF still for a bitmap
Choose the frame you need before converting. Flatten any transparency onto the background colour the device uses. Resize to the exact display size, then convert. A GIF logo may still show a hard edge because its transparency was never smooth.
Keep the GIF until the BMP has been accepted. If the device rejects the file, the original still has the animation and the palette you may need for another attempt.
GIF to BMP for label and sign software
Legacy label designers and sign-making programs often accept BMP because it is easy to decode. They may also expect a specific width, height and colour depth. Convert one test label first, print or preview it at full size and check that the edges and colours are correct before producing a batch.
Keep the GIF or the original artwork as the master. A bitmap built for one printer may be the wrong size or layout for another device.
If the printer or device has a fixed palette, check the output colours before producing a batch; a reduced GIF palette may not match it exactly.
Always check the printed proof.
