What the GATE examination is

GATE is the national examination for admission to postgraduate engineering programmes, conducted by the Indian Institutes of Technology on behalf of the Ministry of Education. A different institute coordinates the exam each year and publishes its own notification, which is where the application is submitted and where the photograph and signature specification is set.

This is the widest set of accepted sizes on the site, and it is worth reading as a set of alternatives rather than a menu to navigate. Four photograph sizes are stored: 530 by 690, 480 by 640, 360 by 480 and 200 by 260 pixels, alongside the physical 3.5 by 4.5 centimetre frame at both 96 and 200 DPI. The signature entries are larger still, including 580 by 180 and 560 by 160 pixel strips, and a 7 by 2 centimetre frame that is far wider than the common 1.5 centimetre height. They exist because GATE portals have varied over the years and the record keeps the published figures rather than only the most recent one, so the size to use is whichever the current year's notification names.

Notices for GATE are published at gate-exam.ac.in. Read the upload instructions from the notice on that site, not from a coaching summary or an older application, because the portal validates against the specification that was current when the form was built.

This page sets out the numbers GATE actually asks for. It is not a general guide to cropping or to the tool interface, because those instructions do not change from one exam to the next and they are written up separately.

What the GATE form asks you to upload

Two files go into this form. They are:

  • A photograph at 530 x 690 px, no heavier than 500 KB and no lighter than 50 KB.
  • A signature at 580 x 180 px, no heavier than 500 KB and no lighter than 50 KB.

The GATE numbers, and why they matter

GATE publishes its sizes in both units, which means the record is offering two ways to express the same kind of requirement. Pick the row that matches how your own advertisement is worded: centimetres when the notification states a physical frame, pixels when it states a resolution. They are alternatives published for different notifications, not a sequence to apply in turn.

Resolution appears more than once in the GATE record, at 200 and 96 DPI. That is not a contradiction: the physical frame is the same in both, and the choice is how densely the image is stored. Where an advertisement is silent, the 200 DPI row is the safer one, because a denser image still measures correctly at a lower resolution while the reverse is not true.

There are two limits to satisfy for GATE, not one. The upper bound on the photograph is 500 KB and the lower bound is 50 KB; the signature runs 50 KB to 500 KB. Compression that overshoots is easy to fix by lowering quality again, but a file under the floor cannot be fixed by compressing further, it needs a larger source image.

The GATE record offers 6 photograph options and 6 signature options: 530 x 690 px; 200 x 260 px; 480 x 640 px; 360 x 480 px; 3.5 x 4.5 cm. These come from different notifications and different recruitment streams rather than from one form, so there is no single right answer to which to use. Take the size from the advertisement you are actually applying under, and if it names a size that is not listed here, enter it by hand in the width and height fields.

If the GATE application refuses your file

  • If GATE refuses a file, start with the weight on the result card against the 500 KB, then look at the picture. At this ceiling, an uncropped phone photo straight off the camera will not fit, so crop before you compress rather than after.
  • For the GATE signature, keep the crop tight around the ink. The 580 x 180 px frame is small, so every extra millimetre of empty paper is weight you do not have, and the 500 KB ceiling does not leave room for it.
  • If the same file is refused twice with identical settings, stop retrying and re-read the notification. Requirements do get revised by corrigendum, and the numbers stored in this tool reflect the specification as recorded.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to position a face inside the crop frame, and how far to push compression before quality suffers, is the same lesson for every exam, so it sits in a single shared guide. Read the complete photo and signature guide.

FAQ

Short answers for the questions users ask before trusting the result.

530 x 690 px at 96 DPI, in JPEG, with the file kept at or under 500 KB and not under 50 KB. That row in the table is the preset the tool applies when GATE is selected.

580 x 180 px at 96 DPI, in JPEG, capped at 500 KB with 50 KB as the floor. Crop close to the ink so the empty paper around it does not push the file past the ceiling.

The ceiling is 500 KB and the floor is 50 KB. Compression runs on export until the output fits, and the result card prints the achieved weight against the limit rather than leaving you to check it yourself.

Keep the download in JPEG. Re-encoding the file afterwards, which is what happens when it passes through a chat app or an image editor, adds bytes and can alter the stored dimensions even though the picture looks unchanged.
